For months now, Republicans have turned to each other and said, "Who's the candidate?"
President Obama is vulnerable in 2012, clearly, but you can't beat something with nothing, and right now, the GOP field looks pretty much like . . . nothing.
Who'll have the stature to compete? Thanks to those Democratic lawmakers fleeing Wisconsin and Indiana to frustrate the democratic process they swore an oath to uphold, we may have an answer.
They, and the demonstrators screaming about the governors seeking cuts in the absurdly generous benefits granted to public-sector workers, have created a national stage on which a new and dynamic candidate can emerge.
The governors (and perhaps the House members) who are taking on these battles are fighting the fight of the GOP future, and one of them now seems certain to take the mantle of 2012.
Judging from his extraordinarily effective speech last night, that governor could be Wisconsin's Scott Walker.
For a week, Walker's wilder opponents have dared to compare him to Hitler and Mubarak. The man who delivered last night's "fireside chat" sounded serious, reasonable, and anything but incendiary.

It looks like some desperate conservative desire to find a candidate RIGHT NOW. It appears that some GOPers and conservatives are absolutely starved for leadership.
Anybody else tired of rushing the selection process? I'm looking forward to a lively primary season when the cream will rise to the top.
Why rush things?
2012 is too early for these new Governors. One or more of them will emerge for 2016 and I think the guy to watch will be Kasich of Ohio.

Nice to see someone else who doesn't think that we should be anointing people to the Oval Office merely based on one or two months in office.
It’s a desperate media thing to find the R candidate right now so they can start destroying him (or her.)
The current state of politics is have the brains behind the scene and an actor on stage that knows their lines, or can at least reasonably read them off a teleprompter and smile and attend parties. Someone either has acting talent and charisma or they don't. It isn't the length of time in office, but the ease of winning elections following the script. We're dealing with an American Idol electorate, and running a rich old white war hero isn't going to cut it anymore.

Let’s hope we already have our guy or gal in the WH by 2016, but you’re right. It’s too soon for this apparently wonderful new crop.
Conservatives just want a leader who will say what they believe and follow through.
So far Walker is doing just that.
Very few pubbies have a set of nads and will stand up for those beliefs.
I hate to say it, guys, but “too soon” is not determined by when we think they’re ripe. It’s determined by the need. Running 50 percent borrowed budgets is, at best, about a three year cycle. Things are coming down quickly.
Not only that, but we want Walker around here for a long time if he continues as he is. There’s a lot of work to be done in this state!

If we’re honest about it, Obama was anointed to the Oval Office based on one convention speech. What had he ACCOMPLISHED as a state senator in Illinois (beside holding the record for most “present” votes)? What had he ACCOMPLISHED in the U.S. Senate before tossing his hat into the ring? Where was his track record of extensive successful experience as either a leader or manager of a large organization? Nada, nada, nada.
I've grown sick of seeing this sort of stuff. I mean, I don't blame people for hungering for a truly conservative candidate to step forward. We all want that. I just think we need to continue to offer support, promote conservatism, and observe potential candidates and see how they hold up under the trial of time.
God bless Scott Walker, he's doing what needs to be done for the very survival of Wisconsin. Once he's served a few years and shown what a great leader he will be if some day in the distant future he decides to rise to a higher calling than governor.
However along the lines of Cripplecreek's comments, I'll keep my panties on for now.

Anyway, who wants to jump on a bandwagon only to find later it has 3 flat tires and always did? Let's go with who we know is conservative and continue to support our rising stars in the mean time.
When a truly Conservative candidate steps up, the RINO’s in the Republican Party will do their best to tear him/her down.
We have already seen it. They have their minds made up that Republicans are going to back Romneycare or Huckabee, or Gingrich, anyone else is going to be attacked by their own party.
If you think the vote in ‘12 is going to a Republican whose highest office into ‘11 was the Milwaukee county executive, you’re sadly deluded.

That’s a good point...some of the rah-rah being created for “new faces” in the conservative wing of the GOP might just be a way to get them in the public eye so the RINOs can undercut them before they can become too successful.
I might be paranoid but I think a lot of the nit-picking we see directed at conservatives here on FR comes straight from the Romney people.
We definitely see eye-to-eye on this.
