Sketching out a worst-case scenario of San Jose's budget meltdown, city officials warned this week that they could lay off as many as 349 police officers and 145 firefighters, slashing close to a quarter of the city's public safety employees.

The city is also looking at millions of dollars in other cuts, including shutting off neighborhood

streetlights for much of the night and eliminating some gang-prevention programs.

There has never been a major layoff of police officers in the city's modern history. But last year San Jose laid off 49 firefighters, and this is the second year in a row the Police Department has faced layoffs.

Translated: They’d rather fire young people and keep old people with lavish income and benefits than adjust the level of income and benefits so the city is safer with more people and young prospects are maintained in the system, providing jobs for them and a future for the institution.

Fire the young; Enrich the old!

Police don’t protect you. They show up after you have been robbed, raped, broken in to. More than half the time they don’t even make an arrest. If they do, half aren’t even charged or sentenced to jail. Not that that stops criminals.

This country got by just fine with out police for three hundred years. Worried about your safety? Get a gun and balls. Got a lot of stuff? Protect it. Or hire others to protect it. Can not afford it? Sell some some stuff, you got too much stuff. Or move. Or not. You are an adult. Why should others be taxed to protect your stuff?

Police are welfare security. They are to security what welfare housing projects are to real neighbors.

Personally, I wouldn’t mind a couple of years of lawlessness( of a type ). Let the scum, dolts, expose themselves so that they can be shotgun’d down and bleed in the streets, business, and homes.

Of course naturally this will result in starving lawyers, laid off judges, prison hack jailers and legions of time serving, clock punching, paper shufflers of the security welfare state. Good.

Very sad to see a good department lose slots but...Let California citizens defend themselves rather than pushing fear of prosecution and litigation for supplanting an expensive government/union function when they use self-defense.

We then will be able to get along with fewer police across the state...but it will be harder to be a bad guy...

They have plenty of money. It’s priorities.

What they are really saying is they don’t have enough money to pay for their pet programs and projects and then pay for the essential services that should be their first responsibility.

The streetlight thing is a reminder to keep every taxpayer aware they are the bad guy.

They say they need to do it.... let's see them do it. Put up or shut up. There's no money left. C-ya!

That money would be better spent putting a personal defense weapon in each home.

That is what these massive debts are doing. Spending money on existing generations income level and passing the costs, with interest, on future unborn( if they are born ) generations.

Generational theft via impersonal government schemes.

Fedgov and the Mini-Me’s are running out of suckers though.

Everyone is pissed at them. Classically old time savers are getting killed with the Zero Interest Rate policy, pensions too. Really, I get the impression that we are swirling around the financial toilet bowel. This isn’t 1929. It is worse. Back then Fedgov was 5 percent of the economy, so there was a lot of room for them to jump into the economy and kick and kick and kick start it. People back then remember little rally pioneer stories from their parents. Today, if you imposed a middle class life style, diet, economy of say even 1950 upon an American, he’d cry poverty.

We have one thing going for us. The US is, believe it or not, a flight to safety. We are by order of magnitudes less messed up then most anywhere in the world. So, we have that going for us, which is nice.( Carl Spackler quote from Caddy Shack )

Why do they never lay off parks and recreation, water and sewer, garbage, librarians, custodians and clerks or other city workers? Always police and fire...................

They'll cut the police but keep their super slick, ultra modern brand new city hall complex.

A-holes.

My car has headlamps.

Did streetlights stop drive by shooting, rapes, break in?

No

I suppose the traditional after dinner walk and a smoke with the wife custom in San Jose is now going to stop.

( Did I say smoking?)
