CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - A proposed law making its way through the North Carolina House is adding more fire to the immigration debate.
House Bill requires the department of Health and Human Services to hand over any information it has on crime suspects.
But critics say the wording of the bill is just a free pass to racially profile and go after illegal immigrants.
If House Bill 28 becomes law, the Department of Social Services will have more work to do.
Sound familiar?
It's the state version of one Mecklenburg County Commissioner Bill James proposed locally last year.
Democrats shot it down.
"Frankly, I think it's a smart move to make by the Republicans in Raleigh to do this," said Bill James, a Mecklenburg County Commissioner.
James says the bill would target fugitives and illegal immigrants on welfare.
DSS knows who's in the country illegally. They don't qualify for services, but their U.S. born children do.
Still by law, the agency can't report an applicant's immigration status to federal authorities unless it knows of a formal order of deportation.
House Bill 28 would change that making it legal to report illegal immigrants to authorities.

...something that Walker should introduce NOW in Wisconsin since the rats want to hide.....pass it, and maybe it will catch on in other states.
Something like 6 months to a year in a jail in the same jurisdiction.
There is no reason to be giving aid to illegals
There is one disturbing possibility that needs some consideration, as it has been seen before.
The Border Patrol would get either illegal or legal children, but not their illegal parents, which caused a nightmare. If the parents showed up to get them, they would be detained and the family deported. But no other, legal, adult, could pick up the children. So the parents didn’t show up, figuring out that the children would lead better lives as detainees than they would back in Mexico.
To make matters worse, without ready documentation, it is very hard to even tell if the children were legal or illegal.
And I have no idea what, if any, way around this problem the BP ever figured out.
Where's the problem?
Ping!
“To make matters worse, without ready documentation, it is very hard to even tell if the children were legal or illegal.”
If they can’t prove legal status deport them!
Any legal rug rat can easily produce a birth certificate!
No way no how can you deport kids without parent or guardian. And seriously, no kid is going to have papers on him. Unless he has dental records, they are wards of the State until claimed or they turn 18.
And that’s an additional problem. Children literally have to be raised by a State, not the federal government, and especially not the BP.
While with indeterminate status, the BP can hold them for a while, pretty soon they have to turn the kids over to that State’s CPS.
Deport them and let some other government take care of them!
I don’t give a rats ass what happens to them.
