The Democrats' Left Turn
American Spectator ^ | February 2011 | W. James Antle, III

Posted on 02/26/2011 12:15:00 AM PST by neverdem

DID THE DEMOCRATS LEARN ANYTHING from the midterm elections? It didn't take long for the party's congressional wing, at least, to reveal that the answer is "no." House Democrats didn't just retain ousted Speaker Nancy Pelosi...

--snip--

Yet liberals are not in the mood to let these Democratic senators do what it takes to win re-election. Politico reported on the rebellion on the left against Sen. Jon Tester (D-MT), a darling of the netroots during the 2006 campaign, for his vote against the DREAM Act. "Not only will I do absolutely nothing to help his reelection bid, but I will take every opportunity I get to remind people that he is so morally bankrupt that he'll try to score political points off the backs of innocent kids who want to go to college or serve their country in the military," wrote Daily Kos founder Markos Moulitsas.

Moulitsas continued: "To me he is the Blanche Lincoln of 2012 -- the Democrat I will most be happy to see go down in defeat. And he will. Nothing guarantees a Republican victory more than trying to pretend to be one of them." Remember that Tester, a near-perfect candidate running against a deeply flawed Republican incumbent in a landslide year for the Democrats, won his first term by just 3,500 votes. David Frum, a critic of purism among conservatives, acknowledges that it is sometimes "rational to prefer to lose a campaign -- even a congressional majority -- to score a big and enduring gain," citing health care as an example. "But the DREAM Act?"

--snip--

If liberals keep pushing Democrats to the left of Obama, people will no longer ask if the party has learned anything from electoral defeat. Instead they will have to ask another question: Do the Democrats have a death wish?

Well, there's one dark cloud on the horizon.

If the RINOs and DINOs are all done away with, so we have a strongly conservative party facing off against a frankly Marxist-Leninist party, with 55% of Americans on our side and 45% on the other, the result may be war.

With a communist minority as large as now exists in this country, electoral victory by conservatives may result in an ungovernable mess.

The fatal flaw of "progressivism" is that like all progressive diseases, it has no stop mechanism,

IMO it goes even deeper than that. Progressiveism is a classic utopian philosophy, and almost all utopian systems misunderstand failure to mean they just didn't try hard enough, instead of there being inherent flaws in their philosophy. Hence the continuing allure of Marxism and public schools, just for starters, to the hard left. One concept Ayn Rand had dead right in Atlas Shrugged is that most of the time it takes a complete meltdown and failure for the failure of such a system to finally be driven home to the true believers in such.

And therein lies a warning to those of us fighting progressivism - the proponents are not fazed in the least by the events of the last few years - they don't see the role of their philosophy in the meltdown - instead it was just the evil capitalists. Forget the government unions bankrupting governments, forget Fannie and Freddie, forget Chris Dodd and Barney Frank - it was those gosh-darned unregulated credit default swaps that caused it all, and the failure of the rich to pay an even higher share in taxes than the lion's share they pay now.

I liked Herman Cain until today.

What happened to change your mind?

“David Brooks’ recent praise of Mitch Daniels in the NY Times has me leaning toward crossing him off my list too.”

How about the worm act he pulled this past week in stabbing the Indiana senate in the back as reason enough to cross him off the list?

Mitch Daniels and Chris Christie were never on my list. Right now I’m only interested in Bachman, Demint or Cain.

Nah. After the war, the new government reinstates the Constitution, with a couple of new amendments (Sharia law is absolutely banned in the US, Marriage is only between one man and one woman, Abortion tossed to the states, among others) and repudiates all debts incurred by the old government. New currency issued on a 10-1 basis (10 old dollars gets you 1 new one) and we can start over with a capitalist economy and begin the work of repairing a shattered land without interference from the progressiviks.

Where are you getting those numbers? The last time I checked the numbers, it was 41 % conservative, 20 % liberal and the remainder of moderates & independents scratching their heads.

I agree with your premise. Though, I have to wonder how many of the 45 percent can be converted to a more rational way of thinking whether through suffering, education and fear as the country moves more and more into leftist tyranny. I don’t think it is a huge chunk who are redeemable but I have to believe we can salvage at least five or ten percent of them.

When we separate out all the sanctimonious blather we see here, you have it pretty much right.

Preach!

I often recall when Obama was giving a speech and he’s braying about how the Republicans did this or that, and the dems in the audience are laughing and applauding.

Then he brings it home and says something like, “And of COURSE when you’re in a recession, you don’t CUT spending!” like he thought that would bring down the house. And even the dems responded with only token applause, as if they were going, “YEAH! YEA—uh, wait, how’s that?”
