An illegal immigrant from the Dominican Republic has pleaded guilty to allegations that he used straw owners to operate several grocery stores in Hartford that he used to defraud the federal food stamp program of about $1.6 million. Federal prosecutors say Apolinare Collado, who also used numerous aliases, allowed customers to exchange food stamps for cash and other products not eligible for purchase with the benefit between 2003 and 2009. The 43-year-old pleaded guilty Friday to one count of food stamp fraud. He faces up to 20 years in prison at sentencing scheduled for June 6. In 1998, Collado was previously sentenced to 18 months in prison and was later deported after he was convicted of food stamp fraud, tax fraud and immigration offenses. He had been detained since January 2009 for immigration violations.
PING
Let’s see now...I guess I could...
...get set up to accept electronic EBT payments;
...buy me a couple of cases of canned corn;
...sell you a can of corn for $100;
...you pay for it with your EBT debit card;
...I give you $50 cash back under the table.
Sounds simple enough.
(if you think this isn’t going on, you don’t get out much.)
Noooo. Where will I get my street tacos?
The ultimate in double taxation.
1. Pay taxes to pay for food cards.
2. Pay taco vendor for tacos made with ingredients bought with food card.
3. Do Not Profit
It’s even worse than that. I saw a sticker on the ATM machine at the Gilroy, CA veterans building: “Try your EBT card here!”.
“at sentencing scheduled for June 6.”
What’s the hold up? Sentence him today, and lock him up!
Yet another U.S. government approved criminal immigrant.
We don’t have enough jails to hold all the worthless, lazy, pukes that are ripping off the food stamp program.
Some EBT cards will also carry a certain amount of “cash benefit” from various welfare programs the holder may be eligible for. Cash is cash, but the grocery portion of the benefit has to get converted somehow and has to involve an accomplice.
This is probably only the tip of the iceberg considering Hartford is a sanctuary city.
maybe to see if uncle sam will want to deport the bastard first. the cad escapes punishment that way, but at least the state saves on the cost of imprisoning him.
When I clicked on this, I expected some Mexican caught heisting a couple grand.
This was an enterprising illegal, we’re talking millions.
Small towns in Arizona are pretty adept at it. 50c on the dollar.
now multiply that by 8 million
They don’t make tacos in the Dominican, they make cigars.
Just committing the crimes Americans won’t.
