Ads a minus for public sector

Have you heard the ads running on the radio this week promoting the local pinky-ring public-sector unions — excuse me, the working people of Massachusetts.
Some public-sector hack comes on and explains how he plowed your street or saved a puppy or some such nonsense. Thank God for the buttons on my car radio. The “working people” need some new writers. I’m here to help with a few new scripts.
“I’m a parking-lot attendant at Logan Airport. That’s right, at the garage that’s fully automated, where you have to pay inside the terminal. I’m the guy you look for — and can’t find — when you come back and realize your car won’t start. Maybe I’ll ‘rent’ you some jumper cables for $20. I make $90,000 a year — more than some of the pilots actually flying the jets. I’m one of the working people of Massachusetts.”
“I’m a toll taker on the Mass Pike. Don’t call me unskilled labor — I had to graduate toll takers’ school to get this job. Flunked out twice, but big deal — the governor failed his bar exam twice, too. You won’t be seeing me here at this booth much longer — I’m planning to drop a cash drawer on my foot and take the summer off. Teamsters rule, dude!”
“I’m a court administrator and I take real loooong lunches. I’m the first nonlawyer to hold this here $130,000 job, which means they had to hire an extra lawyer for $100,000 to perform the duties I can’t do. God save the Massachusetts Trial Court. I’m one of the working people of Massachusetts.”
“I work for the City of Boston. One o’ them snowstorms last month, the DPW was kind enough to come down my street one Sunday night with a CAT, a dump truck, and a supervisor’s pickup truck to clear the snow bank in front of my house. I’m one of the working people of Massachusetts.”
“I’m a cop out on disability at age 44. Maybe you’ve seen me around town jogging, rollerblading, playing tennis — that knee injury was a killer. My spouse is likewise a ‘retired’ cop. We send our kids to private schools. We know our jealous neighbors are diming us out to the papers — anonymously — but what do we care? It’s not our fault they weren’t cute enough to hunker down at the public trough for the duration like we did. We’re the working people of Massachusetts.”
“I’m about to retire from Massport with a $200,000 pension at age 59. I’m walking out the door with $459,000 in unused sick days. I’m one of the working people of Massachusetts.”

thanks—yup, had heard. meanwhile WRKO’s ratings are in the toilet, only a 0.8 last month (less than one percent of audience listening) while Talk1200 only got 0.1; WTKK a 1.8 or something. This is possibly due to the ratings service using Personal People Meters (I know, it sounds like an old song—it was a one eyed, one horned, flying purple people meter). Instead of people just writing down they listened to a show, this follows people as they change stations, etc. Thus people listening to Rush or Howie might tune out after listening to one segment, and the meter reflects it.

New hacks for old! New hacks for old!
Consider the state auditor’s office, a sleepy outpost of the hackerama staffed by generations of coat-holders taking early, very early retirement.
Until January, the auditor was Joe DeNucci, an ex-solon who for decades ran a hack hiring hall for layabouts including the occasional gangster’s wife and his 75-year-old cousin, the “fraud examiner.”
Meet the new boss, same as the old boss — Suzanne Bump, another ex-solon and then secretary of Labor and Workforce Development.
Would you care to guess who Auditor Bump is replacing DeNucci’s hacks with?
Let’s go straight to her office’s statement:
“In building her senior staff, Auditor Bump hired candidates who were uniquely qualified for each position. She chose five of her former employees because they had proven experience and demonstrated leadership abilities...”
Nationwide searches, in other words.
Meet Laura Marlin. In the Labor Department, she was making $94,000 a year. Now she is the first deputy auditor, making, drum roll please, $125,000.
Would you care to guess which candidate Laura gave money to last year? That’s right, her boss — $250 in July, $100 in August, and a mere $25 in October.
Next there’s Jerry McDonough, former general counsel and now deputy auditor for legal and policy. He maxed out each of the past two years to Boss Bump — $500 on Dec. 31 2009 and then another $500 two months later. Shockingly, his pay has gone down, from $116,462 to $110,000. I predict outstanding performance reviews in his future and a well-deserved merit increase, probably by Bunker Hill Day.
Pamela Lomax used to be the manager of the economy recovery program for $77,650 and is now the deputy auditor for administration and finance — $110,000 a year.
Guess we know how Pam’s personal economic recovery program is coming along — swimmingly.
Come on down, Bernadette O’Malley. She lives in Winchester, and like McDonough, she maxed out with $500 to Bump on Dec. 31, 2009, and then did it again in March of last year.
Mrs. O’Malley used to be Secretary Bump’s chief of staff at $105,452, and now she is director of external affairs for $92,500. Surely this will not stand — by hackerama standards, the loyal lass deserves at least 120K.
Then there’s Bump’s scheduler, Jane Frain. She too has absorbed a pay cut — from $67,999 to $58,000 — but then, she didn’t do the right thing by Bump.
Not a dime to the campaign, what did she expect?
Recession? What recession?
No such thing at the State House, that’s for sure.
Serious question here: Could the ratings drops be due to not collecting/recording listeners that use smartphones, tablets, computers? In other words, non-radio listeners of radio programming?
I often wonder if TV networks tabulate “other than a TV” viewers in their collective numbers when they calculate ratings/shares of shows?

Feelin’ Blue, Deval Patrick jets off

Who knew Gov. Deval Patrick was a Peter, Paul and Mary fan?
But yesterday, there he was, leaving on a jet plane, didn’t know when he’d be back again.
Or so he claimed. Deval’s never been real good at taking the heat — not that he’s ever gotten any practice. But boy was he taking it yesterday — about the latest disasters from Blue Cross Blue Shield, run into the ground by his cronies and coat-holders.
Cornered at the State House, he finally bolted for the elevator.
“I have to get a plane,” he said. Yeah, sure he did. His next scheduled event was in Chelsea. How do you get off a plane in Chelsea, Deval? I guess you need a parachute — a golden parachute, preferably. And if you’re Deval, you need at least two of them.
There’s so much for Deval to be ashamed of in this sordid mess, but I think his biggest headache is Clueless Cleve Killingsworth, the 11-million-dollar man. But it’s not Cleve’s proven ineptitude, or his $149 million deficit, or his five-figure contributions to the Democrat kleptocracy.
No, what bothers Deval about Killingsworth is Killingsworth himself. He reminds everyone of where Deval comes from.
Wasn’t it terribly unfair of the Herald to mention yesterday that Deval walked out of Coca-Cola after a cup of coffee with a reported $3.1 million settlement? We should have also mentioned he ran the same grift on Texaco, with a similar seven-figure payout.
The one thing everyone in this whole mess has in common is sticky fingers. Take Paul Guzzi, the career hack who last won an election in 1974. His campaign for the U.S. Senate was effectively derailed when he ran his car into a tree on the Jamaicaway in 1978.
Two years ago, as head of the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce, he had a total pay package of $429,600. Now we find out he’s also grabbing another $84,463 on the Blue Cross Blue Shield board. In retrospect, hitting that tree was the best career move Guzzi ever made.
Charlie Baker is a greed head for his $1.7 million salary, but Killingsworth is one of the Beautiful People. He’s gotten an even bigger pass than Paul Levy, and I’ll bet he didn’t even have a blog or a galpal from MIT.
What do all these hacks on the board have in common — even the Republican ones? They’re all Deval rumpswabs. And most of them come out of the “nonprofit” world.
How about the two AFL-CIO pinky-ring boys, collecting $134,000 from Blue Cross between them, while railing about Republican plots against the “working families” of Massachusetts — and then allowing seniors to be threatened with loss of insurance for nonpayment of a dime.
Frauds, the lot of them.
What were all these greed heads smoking when they signed off on these rip-offs?
