Defiant Clarence Thomas fires back

By: Kenneth P. Vogel February 27, 2011 01:22 PM EST

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas – his impartiality under attack from liberals because of his attendance at a meeting of conservative donors sponsored by the Koch brothers and his wife’s tea party activism – struck a defiant tone in a Saturday night speech in Charlottesville, Va., telling a friendly audience that he and his wife “believe in the same things” and “are focused on defending liberty.”

Delivering the keynote speech at an annual symposium for conservative law students, Thomas spoke in vague, but ominous, terms about the direction of the country and urged his listeners to “redouble your efforts to learn about our country so that you’re in a position to defend it.”

He also lashed out at his critics, without naming them, asserting they “seem bent on undermining” the High Court as an institution. Such criticism, Thomas warned, could erode the ability of American citizens to fend off threats to their way of life.

“You all are going to be, unfortunately, the recipients of the fallout from that – that there’s going to be a day when you need these institutions to be credible and to be fully functioning to protect your liberties,” he said, according to a partial recording of the speech provided to POLITICO by someone who was at the meeting.

“And that’s long after I’m gone, and that could be either a short or a long time, but you’re younger, and it’s still going to be a necessity to protect the liberties that you enjoy now in this country.”

Thomas spoke at the closing banquet for the symposium, which was sponsored by the Federalist Society, a conservative legal group.

A genuine decent, honest patriotic American - which is precisely why obama and his pals want him destroyed. All part of the plan.

So J Thomas and his wife “are focused on defending liberty.” Great!

Only a liberal leftist socialist pig could be against that.

Emphasizing the importance of the Supreme Court, Thomas said “It’s not a game with me. It doesn’t deal with any ego stuff with me. This is about our country. And one of the things I want to do is I want to go to my grave knowing that I gave everything I had to trying to get it right.”

God Bless Justice Thomas.

Thomas sided with the conservative majority in the decision, which allowed corporations to fund political ads and contributed to an explosion in advertising campaigns funded with anonymous contributions in the 2010 midterm elections. Yet dems get all that cash from Unions, mysterious over seas contributions Stimulus money to name a few.

not a big gripe, but I like how Politico goes out of its' way to show that Thomas spoke to a group of conservatives. I don't recall them doing this when a liberal speaks to the media, college students, unions, etc.

Young people should study the life and writings of Justice Thomas, who is one great man, but the public / left wing schools go out of their way to hide him from students. Next February, there should be a Justice Thomas week.

I remember the Anita hill hearings when then Sen Bite-me insisted in pontificating to nominee Thomas in his gas-bag way and Thomas shut him and all the rest down with his accurate description of a 'high tech lynching.'

VP Bite-me has never gotten over that slap-down. Yeah, Plugs, it was a BFD.

I liked Justice Thomas until I read “My Grandfather’s Son.” Now I like, admire, and trust him more than any other justice on the SC. This brilliant man is one of our country’s greatest assets.

I wish that we had 535 of him.

He is also the most lucid writer on the Court today. Clear thinking leads to clear writing, and the liberal dirtbags are almost incomprehensible in the addled gibberish that passes for their "opinions."

Not so with Justice Thomas.

The media have behaved unbelievably toward Clarence Thomas. If Arlen Specter has done one good thing in his life, it was the way he chaired the hearing and put the mud back right on the faces of his accusers.

Clarence Thomas is decent, moral, upstanding, religious, dependable, and a first-class constitutional lawyer. One of the best justices who has ever sat on the Supreme Court.

It’s no wonder if he stays out of the limelight, since he gets smeared every time the press has the slightest chance to do so.

They are dirty, slimy, racist pigs for treating him the way they do. If there is any justice in the world, they had better make their peace with God before they leave this world for the next.

If they even know who God is.

This is a circus. It's a national disgrace. And from my standpoint as a black American, as far as I'm concerned, it is a high-tech lynching for uppity blacks who in any way deign to think for themselves, to do for themselves, to have different ideas, and it is a message that unless you kowtow to an old order, this is what will happen to you. You will be lynched, destroyed, caricatured by a committee of the U.S. -- U.S. Senate, rather than hung from a tree. (notice Biden avert his eyes in shame?)

Justice Thomas, a great American; a Profile in Courage.

Yes. In the context of Thomas it's just another version of the leftist game of good black, bad black. Obama = good black. Thomas = bad black. Van Jones = good black. Condolezza Rice = bad black. Jesse Jackson = good black. Larry Elder = bad black.

I just thought that this might be a good place to remind everyone that Janet Napolitano made her Democrat party bona fides by representing Anita Hill in her accusations against Clarence Thomas during the confirmation hearings.

I think that the Democrats are sure that Thomas is not going to forget that.

You’ve gotta love the use of the term “ominous” by the Politico hacks.

Guess they find nothing “ominous” in the various speeches by the Dung Beetle in Chief, the man with no records, the man who attended a s*it church led by a septic tank dwelling pastor - but never heard any of the idiot things being said.

The man who cannot speak a word without a prompter, but supposedly wrote books on his life (which, by the way, have been proven to have lies almost as great as one of his speeches).

Politico, examine the pond scum in the White House before you try to pitch slime on a truly accomplished and intelligent African American.

Saul Alinsky at work.

I believe Alinsky took a page out of "Critical Theory" which has been used against capitalists and conservatives since those of the Frankfurt School developed the notion. Add in a little marching music from GRAMSCI and they have a blueprint for bringing down the West, in particular these United States.

"The Plan" has been and is being implemented to near perfection by engaging a long list of useful idiots, a cultivated class of "victims" of the system. We know them all as group identities of one stripe or another.

I hope that it was the stress of that knowledge that pushed Napolitano into Parkinson’s earlier than she had been scheduled to get there. God forgive me for saying such a resoundingly uncharitable thing, but I cannot come to terms with what she did in Waco and in the Elian Gonzalez case. A terrible and terrifying woman!

I have to say that Biden was not all that bad during Thomas' hearing. Certainly better than most of them. I recall in particular that he seemed really interested when he learned from Thomas that Hill had been in his apartment a lot, they'd sat and had friendly discussions, etc. Biden said something to the effect of "Wow, I didn't know that. She's really been in your apartment? I wonder why she didn't tell us about that, and I'd like to ask her about that when she comes back." As we all know, she declined the invitation to reappear.

Now, it may well just be that the guy is too stupid to have figured out ways to attack Thomas unfairly, and so his lack of imagine compelled him to be truthful on occasion.

I'm glad he's defending our institutions, too, which Obama is attacking so violently that I really don't think I've seen anything comparable...except in a banana republic when the dictator takes over.

As a Spanish translator, I've seen this a lot in recent years with the resurgence of the Latin American left. And they always launch an attack on the rule of law and the separation of powers (since many of their constitutions have a tripartite system modeled on ours).

Some days I feel like running out into the streets with a loudspeaker, because the same thing is happening here and we're just sitting back and watching it happen.

I’m ok with Thomas leaving the court...as long as President DeMint gets to name his successor.
