Conservative Candidates Are Often Better-Looking

Rightwing candidates are better looking than their leftwing counterparts, something they benefit from during elections, according to a study conducted by Swedish and Finnish economists.

"One possible explanation is that people who are seen or consider themselves beautiful tend to be more anti-egalitarian and rightwing," Niclas Berggren, one of the three co-authors of the study, told AFP Wednesday.

The study compared election results from parliamentary and municipal elections held in Finland in 2003 and 2004 respectively with an online poll of non-Finns to determine how the 1,357 participating Finnish candidates ranked in terms of beauty.

More than 2,500 non-Finns were shown photographs of each candidate, with no indication of which side of the political spectrum they stood on, and were asked to rank them on a scale from one (very ugly) to five (very beautiful).

"We establish two main results. First, we find that the candidates on the right look better than the candidates on the left. Second, we find a greater effect of good looks, in terms of more votes for candidates on the right," the report states.

Berggren pointed out that "several studies have shown that good looks bring more votes, but we believe we're the first to analyse this in terms of political sides."

Explaining the findings, he said that globally, "the left perhaps traditionally has used a more rational approach.

The right meanwhile, "has been more conscious of the importance of looks," he said, pointing to the examples of Ronald Reagan and Sarah Palin in the United States.

The study also shows that the "beauty premium" for garnering votes is more apparent in municipal elections than in a national vote.

It's obvious to anyone with eyes that right wing politicians are better looking than left wing ones, and are also better people and far more likeable. The ugliness of spirit of the left eventually distorts and disfigures their faces, as it has done their souls. They are like burn victims, but for them the burning is within.

However, does the author explain why actors, who usually are very attractive, are almost universally left wing? I think this is a case of displacement.

I have found this to be true with acquaintances,also. My more conservative friends are simply better looking, and are healthier with less angst. They work hard and are generous in spirit and money. They are patriotic and care about the future of this country. Yes, they are good-looking physically and spiritually. The more liberal are usually always bitter about something, and it shows in their faces. They are always looking for a free ride and what’s coming to THEM. The class envy that they feel is palpable....they hate anyone who has more than they do on any level. Classic liberal socialists. And, they vote down the line for the Democrats...Carter, Clinton, Gore, Kerry, and Obama, etc.

I have no respect for them, and it borders on disgust for them when I think about how their votes have affected and will affect the well-being of my family in a negative way. Yes, they are ugly physically and spiritually.

I think it is simpler than that: they live and work in a world of make-beleive. Back in the days of Jimmy Steward, John Wayne, Walter Matthau, Audrie Hepburn and Ronald Reagan, Hollywood lived in the same world as the rest of us and, thus, their political views pretty much reflected the spectrum of public opinion from whence they ame.

My personal belief is that many liberals grew up as social misfits. They were the ugly, the homosexual, the dork, the unchosen. The physically attractive tend to find more acceptance in society and are therefore more desirous to promote the society that accepts them because they find little wrong with it. This, they become conservatives and Republicans.

The misfits hate the society and find solace only with like minds who tell them its possible to change nature so they will no longer be misfits. That’s why unattractive people gravitate to the liberals and Democrats because they see in them hope for the revenge against society that they so crave. Of course, it’s not a hard-and-fast rule. And there are good-looking sociopaths (Bill Clinton, John Edwards) that join up with the Left more to exploit them than to be one of them.
