For me, it was all about ethical meat.
For years I'd been searching for meat I could feel OK about — in terms of the environment, health and animal welfare.
But I never imagined my quest for the most politically correct meat could end with what some see as the nation's least politically correct sport.
Still, for someone who eats meat and cares about sustainable food, hunting makes perfect sense.
•Hunting doesn't demand billions in corn and soy subsidies to make animal feed artificially cheap.
•Hunting doesn't force thousands of animals to live in one crowded room eating chemicals and unnatural diets designed to make them fat quickly.
•Hunting doesn't create giant toxic manure lagoons that pollute American waterways.
•Hunting doesn't require millions of animals to be fed daily doses of non-therapeutic antibiotics, reducing, scientists say, the drugs' effectiveness on humans.

Unbelievable that the Chicago Tribune liberals would print such an article, saying anything positive about guns, especially in such an anti-gun Illinois state government climate.
I hope this catches on.
Liberals taking responsibility for their own damn lunch — using (gasp) GUNS!!! — can’t be anything but good.
Except maybe for the idea of armed liberals who don’t know a deer from a Lab sneaking around our suburban greenbelts... that could get hairy.

There is a lot of that already in rural areas surrounding cities.
Some good examples are upstate New York, New Hampshire, rural Pennsylvania, etc.
They will shoot cows, goats, lawn ornaments, dogs, cars, tractors, farmers, other hunters.
Do you shower? Do you brush your teeth?
Murderer!
Billions of bacteria were killed when you did that.
And if you disagree that you are a murderer, you’re just being size-ist.
What’s the difference between the cow and toe jam? The number of cells, that’s all. So, do you discriminate on the basis of size? That’s so evil. All living beings are Gaia’s creatures.

In North Dakota, there are thorough, well developed hunting ethics and norms.
One day during pheasant / deer season, I was in my little hidey hole (3 square miles of State land I almost always had to myself). I was next to my truck tieing my boots with my shotgun on the ground next to me in a parking area that was 100 feet x 100 feet.
Some guys from Wisconsin roared in with their truck and missed my shotgun by 1 foot, and me by 3 feet.
Ignoring their horrible driving, safety, and manners, I engaged them in conversation as Dakotans ought. I told them where I was hunting pheasant for the afternoon, and where I would be posted up for the evening deer hunt. I was blaze orange from cap to waist.
They set off in the other direction, beating the field as a team with dogs, and shooting wildly at anything that moved. Deer would jump up 200 yards ahead of them, and they would unleash a volley of 30 shots, and apparently all of them would miss.
Later, I set up in my deer post where I told them I would be. After awhile, I could hear them crashing my way. Shortly thereafter, a deer must’ve jumped and run my way, as the bullets zinged just over my head.
After hitting the ground and the gunfire stopped, I hollered and waved my orange cap in the air to make sure they saw me. They did. They never spoke, and headed off in another direction to scare up some more deer.
Now I think I understand who these guys were. They must’ve been SEIU members from Madison.

This article is disgusting! It is appalling to suggest that one must seek to kill wildlife in order to enjoy nature. Hunting will be a sport when the animals are armed with guns, too.
A true story:
Shortly after I graduated from college, a fellow-graduate took a job as an agricultural advisor in Central Illinois - at the time, that’s who hunters took their deer to for tagging. One weekend, a couple of future Obama supporters from Chicago brought him a donkey that they had shot, thinking it was a deer and wanting it tagged. My friend thought that, if they were dumb enough to shoot it, he was going to tag it, and he did.
Can you imagine the hunters proudly driving home with their trophy in the back of their pickup? Or, better yet, when they took it to a taxidermist for processing and mounting? Or, the taste when they fixed it for a celebration dinner?
Now I think I understand who these guys were. They must’ve been SEIU members from Madison.
Or ATF.

How does the author think that those deer,rabbits and other critters got so big and tasty?By eating my corn and soybeans in the field of course.

My father was what you would call a “hard nose liberal”. He grew up in a Republican family, turned Dem during the Great Depression. He went West for a lung ailment in 1929 or 1930. Lived in a pup tent and trapped for 3 years. Had a one shot Civil War percussion cap carbine. He would slowly ride his horse until he got near a deer and kill for food with one shot. Kept sour dough starter for biscuits.
We lived in the NY/NJ area. When I was a child I hardly ever saw him because he was putting all his spare time into trying to keep the Communists from taking over his union and others in the greater New York harbor area. He taught me how to shoot a 22 when I was about 12 or 13. One day we were driving along and saw 4 ducks laying beside the road. He yelled and raged for 5 minutes about irresponsible hunters who would kill something and not eat it. Anyway, not all “liberals” hate guns or love Communists. Incidentally, I have a son doing his 20 in Special Forces with both Iraq and Afghanistan under his belt.
The writer interviewed both a vocal opponent of hunting, and a vocal proponent of hunting. The proponent he interviewed and quoted was Ted Nugent - good choice!
The writer went out with an experienced hunter, and he ended up getting his white tail. He did it all; shot it, field dressed it himself, packed it out, had it butchered, took it home, and ate it. He found the experience enlightening and even fulfilling. At the end of the article he said he didn't know if he would do it again, but he gave the impression that he probably would go hunting again. I enjoyed his article very much.
