Taxing Hiding Senators

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- As Illinois becomes a haven for Democrats on the run.
Some Northern Illinois Senators think the legislators should be taxed for the time they spend in the Land of Lincoln.
Republican State Rep. Mike Tryon of Crystal Lake says he plans to introduce a measure to the legislature to tax the Wisconsin senators for their time working in Illinois.
The 14 democrats have been spotted several times in the Stateline over the last week after fleeing the badger state to stall a vote that would strip unions collective bargaining rights. Senator Dave Syverson says the issue is an interesting one, but says he isnt sure if their actions are taxable.
Senator Dave Syverson said, There has been a precedent set, we do have laws in Illinois that do say if you are going to conduct business in Illinois you need to pay taxes in Illinois so if we follow the letter of the law there is a precedent there that taxes would be made."

The most just thing to do would be to dock their Wisconsin wages on a pro rated basis for the time spent AWOL from their jobs. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
That and void their pensions? LOL.
It's based on where the income is earned, and not all states are aggressive about it. I've no knowledge whether Illinois is. But, for example, trust me, as an employee of a firm in Illinois if I work a day in New York, 1/365 of my earnings will not only be subject to tax in NY, but will be reported to NY. I don't know the reporting requirements of the various states, but per the Franken example, or athletes, you may be subject to state income tax for work, including singing and playing ball, in various states, irrespective of your state of residence or the state of your "permanent" employment.
As I noted, I don't know Illinois' position on this, but as far as I'm concerned they can tax the Senators from Wisconsin and any ballplayers or entertainers who show up here.
BTW, this is an issue primarily because the WI Senate deserters claim they're working here in IL talking to constituents and EMailing. When they go back, they want their pay.
Malfeasance becomes an issue at some point. The WI Constitution allows representatives to be compelled to attend to their legislative business, something the Founders didn’t forsee for Congress. If they’re AWOL, they shouldn’t be paid at some point. And in the end, should be subject to more severe sanctions.
To expaind on MediaMole's answer, in office means from the last election.
