Boy, that's a convoluted way of saying "they didn't do anything wrong".

Which makes me think that what they're really saying is "we'd like to charge them but we'd look like fools".

That is exactly what I thought when I read that sentence. How many negatives can one put in a sentence until the reader just gives up? LOL

I thought so too - what’s with using the word “not” three times when they could have said “It was self defense and a jury would agree.”
