State officials said Thursday that damage to the marble inside and out the State Capitol would cost an estimated $7.5 million.

Cari Anne Renlund, chief legal counsel for the state Department of Administration, said in Dane County court that estimates of damage to marble includes $6 million to repair damaged marble inside the Capitol, $1 million for damage outside and $500,000 for costs to supervise the damage.

Much of the damage apparently has come from tape used to put up signs and placards at the Capitol.

Have you ever tried putting tape on genuine marble and putting it out in the elements to get damp and exposed to sunlight?

This just means the capitol fix requires all the marble to be resurfaced with platinum and gold.

Thanks ...

I keep thinking of Cemetary headstones. Birdpoop is acidic, and Lord knows that they shine back up every rainstorm.

Hard to believe that masking tape would do anything at all to stone.

"This just means the capitol fix requires all the marble to be resurfaced with platinum and gold."

As long as it's extracted from the dental fillings of the protestors, I'm all for it.

The degree of acidity may differ.

to be honest, the scandal here is not the protestors that damaged the property. Who could’ve know that tape can destroy marble. The scandal here is the COST TO REPAIR IT. $7.5 million is robbery

Cemetery headstones are usually made of concrete or granite. I haven’t see a whole lot of marble. Marble is better suited for interior use.

The protesters didn’t think the tea party had the right to protest anywhere!

I don’t understand why they don’t keep the protests outside? I know you can not get into protest at the US capitol. Don’t you think terrorist are watching this, and realising that they could get in there and blow themselves up?!

Isn’t RAT damage cover by home-owners insurance?

Get everybody’s name and bill every damned one of them for a share of the bill. If you count $7.5m in damage and add it to police overtime, and other expenses, these petulant children have cost the taxpayers of Wisconsin upwards of $13 million so far, and the meter’s still running.

They ought to repair it strictly using non union shops

That would probably cut the cost of repair also.

Years ago we did a project on the GW Parkway in Virginia.
The roadway had weathered curb and we had to make ramps across the median to transfer traffic from the workzone.
Upon completion, the grass etal in the medians had to be restored but one of the ‘problems’ we had was trying to match the existing curb with the old.....
“Common sense” does NOT prevail in circumstances like this.
We had to go to court to get our money as the Govt tried to make us make the restoration match the curb that had been there for 40 or some years....

I recommend targeting “working families”

Aesthetic issue? Or were they worried that there would be an uneven curb resulting in pedestrian hazard?

Start fining the protestors and removing them while issuing the fines.

If anyone damages the building, they have no right to remain there. They are committing vandalism, tack on loitering, public disturbance, resisting arrest (they will), etc. Just haul them away.

Get cops that will do their job to do this.

I was going to say that it should be taken out of the state’s portion of the teachers’ insurance package, but either way works for me.

If you go to the cemetery and look, you will see that those headstones made of marble tend not to last long. It is used because it is a beautiful stone, not because it lasts as long as, say granite. And yes, do not use marble in your kitchen unless you have lots of money or eat out a lot.
