Good news: GM sold 281 Chevy Volts last month

That brings the grand total so far up to … 928 cars. Which, believe it or not, is considerably more than its rival, the Nissan Leaf.

I don’t get it. Why wouldn’t someone want to own a $41,000 electric car that under some circumstances gets worse mileage than a Prius?

Why, it’s downright un-American not to.

Peruse Chevrolet’s February sales release, and you’ll notice one number that’s blatantly missing: the number of Chevy Volts sold. The number – a very modest 281 – is available in the company’s detailed data (PDF), but it certainly isn’t something that GM wants to highlight, apparently. Keeping the number quiet is a bit understandable, since it’s lower than the 321 that Chevy sold in January…

Ouch. The big questions, of course, revolve around one word: “Why?” Is ramping up production and deliveries still a problem? Is demand weak? Are unscrupulous dealers to blame? When will sales start to climb? And what are these numbers doing to plug-in vehicle work at other automakers?

Nissan has sold 173 Leafs in two months; Megan McArdle notes that, back in November, its CEO was projecting sales of 500,000 per year by 2013.

The question:

Why did they name it the Volt?

The answer?

Ford already used the name Edsel.

I like Hondas.

I admit it.

Honda has a strategy that works for them... sell 50,000 vehicles of the same model each year and it will be continued and refined in a future model.

Sell less than 50,000 and the model will be killed.

Honda is a SMALL manufacturer of vehicles...

12 X 281 = 3,372.

Go GM!

Sold 281 in San Fransicko, or the whole country? If the whole country, methinks this is why the 0bama administration's policies are pushing $5/gal. gas. How else is he gonna insure a profit for Government Motors?

Any coincidence that Government Motors markets a new electric car at precisely the same time gas prices are headed to and through the roof?

The community organizer in chief has probably “organized” the muslim community to riot across the ME to sell cars.

Asked of a few gun shop owners who all say oblunder has been the best gun salesman EVER.

lol!!!

You have to wonder how many were sold to actual buyers who were showing up at a dealership to buy a car.

I’m sure that more than a few of them were sold to business or government for the purpose of promotions/gimmicks.

What a farce! I wonder how much money GM(us) has wasted on the development and production of this loser. They should have stopped making them like, LAST WEEK!!!! At the rate they are going, they could just about keep their assembly line shut down, and just build them as people order them(a handful per month at the most). GM is probably praying literally for the situation in the Middle East to continue to get out of hand, and send gasoline prices to Mars, but even then, the Volt is a loser, compared to other less expensive options for fuel economy.

Really? Then how did the NSX and the S2000 hang on for so long?
