Former Rep. Heather Wilson is officially pursuing the Senate seat to be vacated by longtime Sen. Jeff Bingaman in 2012.

“I’m running for United States Senate because I believe in this country and this promise,” Wilson said. “If we stand by and do nothing, history will judge our generation as the beginning of America’s decline.”

Wilson made the announcement on Monday afternoon at a news conference at Desert Paper and Envelope in Northeast Albuquerque.

“We face great challenges, but we are a great nation,” Wilson said.

This is no surprise and it should help Republicans win the general election. I know that many conservatives are lukewarm about Wilson, but her record overall is good enough (ACU 78). Also, I don’t think the U.S. Attorney flap will be a big deal, as her involvement in it was very minor.

Let’s hope that no Christine Odonnells lurk in nm. It is moderate state.

Good point. Unfortunately, many conservatives haven’t learned from that experience.

O’Donnell succeeded in stopping the Socialist Castle. That was badly needed. We need not fear running actual Conservatives. Democrats certainly don’t fear running Stalinist moonbats.

Oh, well, as Ted Kennedy would say, that’s water under the bridge. We have plenty to keep up occupied this cycle.

There is talk that John Sanchez will run, but that’s far from a given. To be honest, I don’t know much about his views or what his standing with the public is.

Yes....because Castle would have been such a great senator....sorry, i’d rather have future resource spent electing true conservatives in states like MT, MO, and ND then wasting resources on a guy like Castle. Glad he lost and thank you Christine O’donnell for taking him out. We’ve tried your way. It hasn’t worked.

Castle is an old tired draft dodging closeted homosexual, and he would have been an embarassment to the GOP had he been elected. It is well he is out of office.

Steve Pearce is making noises about entering the race again. He was up against Heather in the Primary and they beat each other to a pulp. Even though Pearce won, he lost to Udall badly and we got Rat Harry Teague in our southern NM congressional district.

Steve won back the seat last November by a healthy margin. He is where he belongs, supporting the O&G industry, opposing Forest Service lockup of public lands and overall doing great things in the district. I don’t want to see him repeat the process all over again and again we lose a US senate seat and probably a congressional seat as well. He needs to sit this one out.

Thanks, I agree we need Steve right where he is. I think Heather will do good. Sanchez just got elected Lt.Gov. Needs to stay there and get some good experience. Am onEastern side and always enjoy your posts. Denco

Yeah, as big a supporter of Pearce that I am, He is where he belongs, and I hope to god he stays there.

As far as Heather Wilson.... She is where she belongs now too. I’m as excited about her running for Senate again as I would be for McCain or Huckabee to run for for President again. We don’t need any more Snowe / Collins types in the Senate, and despite her early pretty conservative beginnings, Heather is no longer that person.

O’Donnell didn’t lose only because she was “too conservative” but a poor candidate with a past that was ripe for derision. Certainly we don’t want that kind of candidate to run (not I’m upset she beat ultrarino Mike Castle, that was a loss either way). But better qualified conservatives can certainly win in swing state New Mexico if not more liberal Delaware.

That said I’d except Wilson. She’s less pro-life but otherwise pretty similar to the last NM GOP Senator Pete Domenici.
