Android moves into first place in market share

Last time we checked in with ComScore's report on smartphone platform market share among US subscribers three months ago, Android was doing a little happy dance as it overtook iOS for the number two spot overall. Well, the cuddly green bots have self-replicated yet again, enough to overtake RIM this time thanks in part to a 5.4 percent decline on BlackBerry's part (down to 30.4 percent in January) coupled with a 7.7 percent boost on the Android side, moving up to 31.2 percent. We imagine ComScore's next report -- covering the period through March -- will see a little boost on the iOS side thanks to Verizon's iPhone launch, but RIM's knight in shining armor might be further out; we still don't know when QNX-based phones are going to happen, after all, and devices like the Monaco don't really seem like cure-alls.

Thinking about upgrading to an HTC Incredible. It is off da hook!

HTC Incredible gets end-of-lifed soon. Make sure you get it for free if with contract, and don’t expect Android support for very long.

Just wait til next year when microsoft has all windows type GUIs unified. Your phone, netbook, desktop, and xbox will all use similar and interchangeable and compatible operating systems. Then we’ll see what phone OS rises to first place.

I don’t know enough about iPhones, but I can’t imagine having anything that makes me happier than my Droid-X.

I have no use for Apple computers or their general business practices; nonetheless they reign supreme in gadgets. The Iphone is significantly more capable than other choices.

“I don’t know enough about iPhones, but I can’t imagine having anything that makes me happier than my Droid-X.”

What does it do???

I have a old flip phone from Verizon that makes and receives calls (no texting).

Does this Droid thing do texting and take pictures and stuff like that? Does it do stuff like the “Crack”berry that I see the zombies use at my work all the time?

Hmmm...trying to think of something my Android phone can’t do that an Iphone can...

Oh! Thought of something....cost more.

But...to stay on topic, this isn’t about hardware. This is about the Android O/S.

Come back and a year and let us know how that’s worked out for ya. Having wasted money on Windows CE and Mobile for over a decade I think I can predict but hey, like O’Reilly says, “I could be wrong”

Just my .02 (flame suit on)

I have a Droid2 Global issued by my work and a personal iPhone. No comparison for me; I prefer the iPhone hands down.

Got some news for you...Android already does that from within windows.

Nothing wrong with that. It’s a matter of personal preference.

lol

I have a flip phone too. But mine has a camera and texting. That’s really all I need. I can probably do without the camera.

I think what MS is aiming for is a phone that is your computer. when you want to use a desktop computer there will be a docking station that your phone plugs into and an auxillary mainboard and hardware will sync up with your phone to boost it’s capabilities. I don’t really see that happening with a linux based operating system on your phone, and a windows based operating system on everything else. But I could be wrong.

I think the problem with windows based phone OSs to date has been that phones don’t have enough computing horsepower. We are about to see phones on the market with EXCESS HORSEPOWER. But like you and BOR said, I could be wrong.

Does it do stuff like the ?Crack?berry that I see the zombies use at my work all the time?

You mean things like full email support so the zombies can leave their desks and still know the boss has scheduled a meeting in 20 minutes? And the ability to freep in the doctor's waiting room rather than read Newsweek? I'm sure it has all that.

I have an iphone 3gs and my contract with AT&T is in June. That’s when I’m planning on my next phone.

Good friend of my mine has the Droid-X and loves it. The screen size is impressive and so was some of the apps he was running. I could see how you had more control over the phone when it comes to settings and running apps.

One of the phones I’m considering if I don’t choose Verizon’s iphone 4 is the Droid Bionic.

dual core processor with latest version of Android, and well sized, very high resolution display.

But what really stands out is that this phone will work on Verizon’s 4G network. The data upload/download is damn fast.

I was hoping that Verizon was planning an iphone version this year that would work on the 4G network. But so far, doesn’t look like that is going to happen in 2011.

AT&T’s network is total oversubscribed joke and I can’t wait to get away from them.

Yeah, and I've been doing something similar with Linux, rack mounted to hand-held. From the monster servers at work (think 64 core, memory pushing 200 GB), to my 5 year old desktop, to my netbook, to my Android based phone... The netbook and desktop are very, very similar, being Ubuntu desktop and netbook remix. But hey, if Windows wants to play catch up, that's fine.
