Reid: Save federal funding for the cowboy poets!

In the middle of his tirade against House Republicans' "mean-spirited" budget bill on the Senate floor Tuesday, the Senate Majority Leader lamented that the GOP’s proposed budget cuts would eliminate the annual "cowboy poetry festival” in his home state of Nevada. (See also: Reid’s prostitution lecture bombs.)

Reid clearly has a soft spot for the Baxter Blacks of the poetry world and thinks Republicans don't.

“The mean-spirited bill, H.R. 1 … eliminates the National Endowment of the Humanities, National Endowment of the Arts,” said Reid. “These programs create jobs. The National Endowment of the Humanities is the reason we have in northern Nevada every January a cowboy poetry festival. Had that program not been around, the tens of thousands of people who come there every year would not exist.”

Riding on the range,
I've got my hat - on,
I've got my boots - dusty.

I've got my saddle
On my horse.
He's called....T-t-t-t-t-trigger
Of course.

I wanna be a cowboy
and you can be my cowgirl
I wanna be a cowboy
and you can be my cowgirl
I wanna be a cowboy

(woman's voice)
Riding on the chuck wagon,
Following my man.
His name is Ted,
Can you believe that?
Camping on the prairie
Plays havoc with my hair.
Makes me feel quite dirty,
Though we all do sometimes

I wanna be a cowboy
and you can be my cowgirl
I wanna be a cowboy
and you can be my cowgirl
I wanna be a cowboy

Looking like a hero,
Six-gun at my side,
Chewing my tobacco.
Out on the horizon,
I see a puff of smoke.
Indians on the warpath,
(Indian voice) White man speak-em with forked tongue.
Or not.
I wanna be a cowboy
and you can be my cowgirl
I wanna be a cowboy

My name is Ted,
And one day I'll be dead yo yo

If we actually leave enough written material to preserve an accurate record of these times, our descendants are going to marvel at the fact that we survived at all. Any why we suffered these fools so peacefully.

Hey! I live ten miles from there. I had no idea taxpayers were supporting this “festival” in town. We have a huge convention center they use and the local busyness’s have nightly activities going on during that week. I don't see why this isn't self-supporting. It does bring a lot of money into town.

Harry has his priorities straight, that's for sure. /s

I think that I've finally figured out his strategy... He wants the taxpayers to fund his cowboy pork, but wants to close down the financially successful (and tax revenue generating) brothels in NV... I guess that proves that Dingy Harry thinks that the only people who should get screwed are the tax payers.

“Had that program not been around, the tens of thousands of people who come there every year would not exist.”

Whoa cowboy! That’s one powerful gubbmint. Bringing people into existence with just a bit of big-hearted funding.

Of course, if the gubbmint would stop funding planned parenthood, it could bring a lot more people into existence. Maybe some would even grow up to be cowboy poets.

Say it ain't so. Please say it ain't so.
Baxter Black has been sucking off the taxpayer teat? Oh man, I have been a Baxter Black fan since he was a large animal vet in Brighton and the only poetry gigs he could get were at the local feed stores.
Damn, Damn, Double Damn.

National Endowment for the Arts was abused. It doesn’t deserve any money.

This is why government spending will not decrease. Everybody wants to keep his or her pet projects, and this includes Republicans. Just ask Sen. Inhofe, ostensibly one of the most conservative senators.

If the American people truly wanted smaller government and less spending, we would have it now. I am not optimistic for the future.

In addition, it's really important for 0bama and the dems to keep spending high right now so that later they can say "see? The republicans didn't cut anything either. They spent just as much or more than we did. Blah blah blah."

Sometimes when you feel a country song coming on you just have to go with it.

On the Gummint Teat

Well, my pickup blew a tire while a-drivin' down the road
And the truck bed shifted and I nearly lost my load
I was haulin' out the garbage for the local Vegas mob
Yessir, working for the Dems can be a pretty dirty job
Got a ton of lyin' pamphlets and some signs on wooden stakes
And some plastic Grecian columns that the dump, they wouldn't take
Gonna dump it in the desert and then smoke a little crack
Sure, I know I'm on the clock but Dingy Harry's got my back.

Chorus

Well it's all good now, got our place in the sun
Dingy Harry's in the Senate, in the White House is The One
Got a cushy union contract and my life is now complete
Don't need no honest job, cause I'm on the gummint teat.

Bridge

You racist Tea Baggers can't get me
I'll take all the money they let me
Your wallet's drainable
It's all sustainable
Long as the Dems don't forget me

My ol' hound dawg died and my woman done me wrong
And I don't need nuthin' else to make this thing a country song
Just a little walkin' money and a couple thou a day
From the grant that Harry got me from the good ol' NEA
It's all free and it's cash, every penny's tax-exempt
My accountant he just told me I could still receive food stamps
So I'll throw a little money into Harry's chest once more
And I'll take my union pension and retire at 44.

Chorus

Well it's all good now, got our place in the sun
Dingy Harry's in the Senate, in the White House is The One
Got a cushy union contract and my life is now complete
Don't need no honest job, cause I'm on the gummint teat.

Well it's all good now, got our place in the sun
Pick the pockets of the Pubbies and their bones a-later on
I'm a ruling class honcho and my life it can't be beat
Don't need no honest job, cause I'm on the gummint teat.

(Fade chorus)

Cowboy Poet? Well I think I am one and enjoy what I do. Others also seem to enjoy what I do, but the large gatherings spoken about by Reid is not what the Cowboy Poetry Gatherings started out to be. Gatherings started out as a bunch of cowboys who happen to enjoy writing poetry got together to entertain one another. Should someone else show up to listen, then that was an added pleasure of the gathering. The thousands which Reid spoke of is nothing more than an entertainment event much like a professional singer charges for tickets.
There are still some gatherings around the country where cowboys actually do recite their poems and local folks greatly enjoy the gathering.
THE ECONOMIST

Randy Jones and Booger Red,
With a tough ol’ yaller houn’
Wuz huntin’ deer out in the brakes
‘Bout forty miles from town.
Almost starved, ‘cause game was scarce,
They wondered what to do.
So chopped the tail off that ol’ dog,
And cooked it down for stew :.

They ate the meat ‘n drank the soup
Then tossed the dog the bone.
The grateful pooch licked Randy’s hand
When everything was gone.
Then Booger looked at Jones and said:
“I’ll call a spade a spade;
If you really study what we’ve done,
It’s just like Federal Aid”.

I can just imagine what the Cowboy Poetry Fest looks like. Something from the Village People.

Here is the 19 second clip of him saying this idiocy. You know you are losing the argument when you are pleading with the people to save this BS

There once was a Cowboy named Reid
The South end of a North bound Steed
He came from Nevada
Where they can’t rhyme for nada!
Unless spending our money with greed!
