(CNN) -- An alleged sexual assault of a Texas girl involving nearly 20 people was recorded on cell phones, and a video of the alleged incident was circulating among students in her school district
As of Monday, 13 adults and five juveniles had been arrested as part of the investigation, authorities said. A defense attorney for one of the suspects told CNN affiliate KPRC that the number of suspects could increase.
"I don't know the exact number of people involved," James Evans said. "I've heard as many as 28 or more."
The case has sharply divided the community, according to CNN affiliate KHOU, which reported the girl was 11 years old.
Darrel Broussard, assistant police chief for the Cleveland, Texas, Police Department, said Monday that the investigation into the incident "is continuous,"...
Cleveland is about 50 miles northeast of Houston.
The 18 individuals charged thus far are between 14 and 27 years old, he said. Those who are adults were indicted last month on a charge of aggravated sexual assault of a child.
The girl told a forensic interviewer from a child advocacy center that one suspect called her "and asked if she wanted to ride around" on that day, the affidavit said. Three of the suspects picked her up and took her to one residence where a fourth suspect lived. The fourth suspect told her to take her clothes off, she said, adding that "he would have some girls 'beat her up' or she would not be taken back to her residence if she did not comply." the affidavit said.
"Victim stated that digital still images and digital video images of the sex acts were recorded by one or more individuals using cellular telephones," according to the affidavit.

I’ve seen nothing stating the race of the girl. Her mother’s name is Maria according to the article I linked above.
The incident took place Thanksgivng, 2010. POlice sure took their time issuing warrants, eh.
The “community” is divided? About what - whether to hang them or feed them into a woodchipper?
It happened in Cleveland recently, and Trenton.
There are 11 y.o.s who are bigger than I am, who are sexually active by choice, but that doesn’t matter - their minds are still children’s minds, and any adult - anyone over 14 who has sex with them even with consent - needs to receive the full penalty for statutory rape.
This of course was rape by coercion. I doubt any girl wants to service a few dozen men.
The really sick, sick, debased, prideless thing, is that these men wanted to line up to do an 11 y.o. It’s not like they couldn’t get any anywhere else; they actually wanted to line up and take turns.
I read somewhere that the little girl’s family are receiving threatening and harassing phone calls.
Some of the high school students are good athletes and one is the son of an official, school board IIRC.
The whole thing is beyond sickening.

I don’t care what color the girl is. Anyone supporting the perps is as evil as the perps.
How does this divide the community?

Hate crimes only apply when the victim is a minority. This is basically what Eric Holder and Co. have said.
As someone in law enforcement going on two decades now I am disgusted that we even have special “hate crimes” on the books. Every crime of violence is hateful and dispicable and they should be treated equally no matter what race or special category the victim may or may not fit into. The color of the perp should not matter nor the circumstances or stated reason.
Once they are found guilty of the crime the Judge has the discretion to give a harsher sentence based on any extenuating circumstances.
Hate crimes legislation simply divides our nation and people further. This is especially true when people rightfully note that the legislation does not apply when the victim is a “non-minority” or the perp is a “minority”.
We need to get away from the hyphenated America and stop letting people divide us or categorize us. We are Americans and Lady Justice is supposed to weigh our worth and value equally.
Sad. This story is horrible.
I just did a bit of research and found absolutely nothing that confirms the victim’s skin color. But I did find an anecdotal account — some local (Houston) resident said he saw the victim’s aunt interviewed on TV, and that she was black.
