The US economy grew at a weaker pace than initially believed in the second quarter, the government said Friday in a report that underscored the tenuous nature of the two-year-old recovery. The Commerce Department lowered its estimate for second-quarter growth in gross domestic product to an annual rate of 1.0 percent from the first quarter, from a prior reading of 1.3 percent. "The recovery continues, but is extremely fragile. The economy has expanded just 1.5 percent over the past year, too weak to create the job growth necessary for a self-sustaining expansion," said Augustine Faucher at Moody's Analytics. Growth in...

A defense attorney for one of the suspects told CNN affiliate KPRC that the number of suspects could increase. "I don't know the exact number of people involved," James Evans said. "I've heard as many as 28 or more." The case has sharply divided the community, according to...

Here is video of RNC Chair Michael Steele being asked if he has given consideration to stepping aside as Chair of the Republican National Committee. Steele said, "I ain't going anywhere." He also said he and his fellow Republicans have a fundamentally different view of America. Steele said he believes we are an "exceptional people," while President Obama, Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid "have a different view." Uh, we’ll see if Republicans agree that he should stay.

Jay-Z and Beyonce visited their good friend President Barack Obama at the White House on Thursday ... and from the looks of it, Hova felt right at home underneath the presidential seal. While they didn't announce their candidacy, Bey & Jay -- along with Tina Knowles, Trey Songz and the rest of their entourage -- did snap a couple of pics inside 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Jigga is in a head of state of mind.

His fightin' mad supporters and vocal sycophants want the President to get down with dirty politics - to go "gangsta". So, will he? In a recent column for CNN.com, fiery political analyst Roland Martin urged the President of the United States to get down and dirty with his political adversaries. Like, you know, jump ugly and go all street thug on ‘em. Clearly spoiling for a fight — and with a curious, chest-bumping homage to the nasty culture of radical rappers — Martin wrote: Obama's critics keep blasting him for Chicago-style politics. So, fine. Gun play becomes Atlanta area rapper Waka Flocka Flame. His most recent mix tape is called "Salute Me or Shoot Me, Vol. 2," and the "L" in his logo is shaped by an upright semi-automatic handgun. And Tuesday evening, the 23-year-old rapper was recovering after being shot earlier in the day during an apparent robbery. Born Juaqin Malphurs, the rapper was washing his car at the Bubble Bath Car Wash at 5220 Old National Highway around 1:30 p.m. when he was approached by an armed man demanding Malphurs' jewelry, police said. This president got rolled by the Senate over health care. His team made some boneheaded mistakes, and now they are paying for them. Continuing to play footsie with opponents will only get him into more trouble. He should set a deadline to have his folks confirmed. If not, appoint them all during the recess and go on about your business. Obama's critics keep blasting him for Chicago-style politics. So, fine. Channel your inner Al Capone and go gangsta against your foes. Let 'em know that if they aren't with you, they are against you, and will pay the price.

Today, President Obama walked into the White House briefing room and took some questions, and one of them revolved around recess appointments. MOBILE, Alabama - A shoplifter is caught by police, but not before he is caught by his dreadlocks. Mobile police say Gregory York stuffed steaks and several other items in his pants and tried to walk out of the Greer's Food Tiger on Broad Street Tuesday afternoon. The manager grabbed York by his shirt and dreadlocks. Some of the merchandise fell out of York's pants. But he got away with at least two packs of steaks.

In the city of Chicago "politics" is done very differently than in much of the rest of the nation. Evidently in tiring of hearing from "we the people," the current administration has a political death wish. Many of the prominent capitol hill leaders seem determined to join Obama and company as they plummet fully another sixth of the American economy into the eternal abyss. But we would not be at this point if President Obama had not broken very specific promises. Most specifically he has broken his constant pledges from the campaign trail to be a different kind of leader....

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, never shy with a photo opportunity, took his man-of-the-people act to the hip-hop dancefloor, where he used a rap music competition to deliver an anti-drugs message. "Graffiti is becoming a true art, fine and delicate," Mr Putin, clad in a beige turtleneck and grey sports jacket, told a young crowd at the "Respect" rap contest. "And breakdance is something peculiar," he said. "This really is propaganda for a healthy lifestyle because it is hard to imagine breakdancing having anything to do with drinking and dope," Mr Putin said. The powerful Russian president-turned-Prime Minister praised the...

Kim Clijsters Advances to Finals Over Serena Williams Williams looks a little somber as she begins her serve, then slaps a backhand into the net. Then she hits an ace. Balance returning. She’s got to keep the ball in play here and doesn’t, hitting another backhand into the net. Clijsters is two points from the match and the finals. She’s got to keep that out of her mind. Williams goes up the T but misses, then foot faults. Scolding the lineswoman may help her get back her strength, but she’s down match point. Boos may also drive her back into...

A Republican member of the House Ways and Means Committee says America can't afford to pay for the Democrats' government-run healthcare plan, just like it couldn't afford to pay for the stimulus and cap-and-trade bills. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-California) stated recently that the American people back Democrats' trillion-dollar healthcare plan, which will create $550 billion in new taxes over 10 years. "Over the coming days, Congress will continue working with President Obama to provide stable prices, secure coverage, and quality care for all Americans," Pelosi said. "We're very pleased we have the support not only of the doctors, but...

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Hip hop mogul 50 Cent, Universal Music Group and several of its record labels were sued on Wednesday for promoting a "gangsta lifestyle" by a 14-year-old boy who says friends of the rapper assaulted him. The lawsuit also names 50 Cent -- whose real name is Curtis Jackson -- Violator Management,...

Criminal gang prosecutors are unimpressed. "Generally speaking, those wearing Raiders gear in Southern California are associated with gangs," said Cheryl Kersey, who leads...

Gangsta rap on death row as the US tunes out By Tim Shipman in Washington, Sunday Telegraph Last Updated: 11:48pm BST 30/06/2007 To judge by their lyrics, gangsta rappers are adept at seeing off rivals with a bullet and their women with a slap. Rappers Spliff Starr, Eminem, Papoose and Busta Rhymes on stage But America's rappers are now trapped in a corner they don't seem able to shoot their way out of, with either weapons or words. Confronted with haemorrhaging sales, the most assertive popular music movement since the Sex Pistols has lost its swagger and is suffering a...

For decades, school districts have organized around a simple idea: Whatever you give to white students, give it to black students, too. Put both groups of students in the same schools. Expose them to the same teaching. If they struggle, give them the same help. In the Tampa Bay area and across the nation, this was how educators atoned for the long-ago sin of relegating black children to inferior schools. Now, in a class-action lawsuit that has Pinellas County's top educators on the defensive, the plaintiffs say the policy of equal access has failed the school district's 20,000 black students....

A furor over what Concord High School administrators call an "overtly sexual" style of dancing at school dances has split the school community: There are those who defend the students'right to dance however they want and those who believe the moves are just plain inappropriate.
