SEX AND THE SILLY
Steynonline ^ | 9 March 2011 | Mark Steyn

Ross Douthat, the token conservative at The New York Times, is, tonally, the very soul of moderation. For those of us of a more foamingly right-wing bent, he can, indeed, be excessively mindful of his readers' sensitivities - and a fat lot of good it does him. So this week he writes about some of the consequences of the sexual revolution - all very sober, very measured. At the Times website, the commenters immediately retreated to the most cobwebbed tropes: bozack of dc thinks "nonmarital sex is an unalloyed good thing, a part of personal fulfillment", and that any suggestion to the contrary is all about social conservatives "wanting to control women's sexual decisions". A reader from Seabeck, Washington thinks we need "public sex workers or educators" to come up with "new ideas about how humans can live in groups and still fulfill the biological desires that sex entails". Etc.

Steyn writes very well.

Steyn, however, is AWFUL on the radio.

In a post-prosperity America, those sophisticated New York Times readers won't even be able to afford to buy them off with bigger welfare checks. In a land of fewer jobs, more poverty, more crime, more drugs, more disease and growing ethnocultural resentments, the shattering of the basic social building block will have consequences in the years ahead far beyond the healing powers of "public sex workers or educators" attuned to your "biological desires".

You want to live like the bonobo? Be careful what you wish for.

Post-prosperity America. That says it all. It's good to have Steyn back, but the truth really hurts.

“Steyn writes very well.

I would say to you, give him another chance. Maybe it’s an acquired taste, but I’d rather listen to Mark Steyn on the radio than just about anyone else. He’s really good at making liberals look ridiculous, and you can tell he is having so much fun while doing it. It seems like he laughs about every 30 seconds while he’s doing his shtick, and I find myself laughing right along with him.

Ross is just afraid that some of us “experienced” women will find folks like him woefully inadequate in the sack if we have someone to compare him to.

That's why Islamic Fundamentalist leaders promise their suicide-bomber patsies 72 virgins. Deep down, the patsies know that experienced women would just point and laugh.

The money quote:

“As Congressman Mike Pence put it, ‘To those who say we should simply focus on fiscal issues, I say you would not be able to print enough money in a thousand years to pay for the government you would need if the traditional family collapses.’”

You must be kidding! Mark is twice as funny as Jon Stewart and ten times as intelligent. When Rush retires, I hope he will pass the torch to Mark. No one can articulate conservatism quite like him.

I don’t like that it clearly hurt Mark’s feelings. That makes me unhappy. It doesn’t, however, change my opinion. I love him in print; he’s one of the best in the world — but on the radio, I switch stations when he subs for Rush.

Steyn (on the radio) must be a taste I cannot quite grasp. The repetition, the giggling -- it leaves me flat.

That said, I seek printed Steyn out every single time. In the written word, as you have correctly noted, no one can articulate conservatism quite like him.

Sorry Mr. Steyn. I don't like that I may have offended you, but it is my personal view. Just take the printed-word kudos -- which are strong -- and run with those. :)

I would not take it that you hurt his feelings. I think he likes to remind himself that not everyone love what he says or in your case everything he does. It might be an exercise he engages in to keep himself humble.

I view him like Coulter on TV. Steyn nor Coulter are as good on tv or radio as they are in print. But they are still good in my view, but they are at their best in print where they can turn a well crafted phrase.

That is the mark of a good man (pardon the pun). Would that Charlie Sheen had done the same.

are you kidding? I'll listen to Steyn over Rush, Beck, Hannity, Ingrham, Pags, Williams, etc, etc, etc.
