INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - A woman well known for fighting laws that crack down on illegal immigrants is now being sued by the state of Indiana.
M. Esther Barber owns a company called Mexican Civic Association of Indiana. She opened it in 2006. The company offered immigration-related services to Spanish-speaking clients.
In a two count lawsuit filed Wednesday, the state says Barber violated the deceptive consumer sales act.
The suit alleges she was providing services for a fee without the proper licenses or training.
Abby Kuzma, a Deputy Attorney General and Director of Consumer Protection in Indiana, said the advice Barber was giving was not adequate.
"The forms that she was providing, the documentation which she was providing was not adequate, Kuzma said.
In at least one case, Kuzma said after Barber's advice caused the client to be deported, when they might have had cause to remain in the U.S.
The lawsuit against Barber is one of two filed Wednesday by the Attorney General. The other is against a company in Fort Wayne. The suits are civil, not criminal, and seek to shut down the business, return the client fees, and procure civil penalties in the thousands of dollars.
In Barber's case, the Attorney General is also investigating possible tax evasion.

she is actually performing a public service, one that the DHS is failing to accomplish.
Maybe she can make a plea deal and agree to perform more public services like this.
