Check with your doctor. It’s true.

My friend had many problems and was depressed. She nevertheless consumed lots of alcohol and took Tylenol for her constant headaches. I warned her time and again but no avail.

She eventually died of acute liver failure. Not a good way to go.

No reason for Tylenol unless you’re allergic to aspirin though I have found Tylenol effective sometimes when ibuprofen would not do anything for my headache/pain. I admit I did not try aspirin when the Advil didn’t work.

My 94 year-old father drinks two glasses of red wine each and every night.....and has for years. It helps him sleep and he has no dementia.

It certainly works for him.

Now, if I could just stop him from chasing all the elderly widows at his “luxurious retirement home”......and them chasing him! When I took him for his last exam at the Dr., he actually asked for a Viagra prescription!

Finally, I have a realistic role model to aspire to. Outstanding.

Actually, no, he didn’t. Our family doctor (for the past 20 years) laughed and told him to get some body lotion and a vibrator. My dear old dad is quite a character and often the talk of the town....much to my embarrassment. But, he lives live (what few years he has left) to the fullest. And I won’t deny him that. He is amazing.

"I remember colored TP.......also colored Kleenex. Heck, I even remember when all Band Aids were white. Guess I’m old."

Wow, I'd forgotten all about colored TP and tissues. I guess since I've lived in houses with septic systems much of my life, I never got into the habit of buying colored TP and didn't realize it was no longer available. I suppose colored TP and tissues aren't 'green', even if they are green . . .

If you want to feel old, try putting a dial phone in front of a teenager and watch them figure out how to use it.

My dad is 90, and mom is 85. They are sharp and continue to live in the house they've lived in since 1959. They also continue to enjoy their beer and wine.

Its not a very good alternative; its dangerous at very low dosages.

Actually, that is not totally correct. The history of aspirin is really complicated. Monsanto started making aspirin in 1917 in St. Louis, because the USA could not get aspirin due to the war (as it was invented and produced by Germany’s Bayer).

Due to the war, Bayer lost the trademarks and it started to be produced in the UK and other parts of the world. Monsanto’s plant was the largest manufacturing factory in the world (at the JF Queeny Plant) in downtown St. Louis.

Dow was the major competitor in the USA and was building a new plant in Midland in 1985, I believe(I don’t know the history of this new plant —if there are Dow people that know, it would be interesting). There were other competitors like Sterling (Bayer in the USA, but not related to the name of same company in Germany).

Monsanto got out of the aspirin business in 1989 and their plants in the UK, St.Louis and Thailand, was sold to the world’s largest aspirin manufacturer, Rhone Poulenc. That plant has long been shutdown (2001. However, Rhone Poulenc was sold off (now part of Sanofi), but the aspirin (and acetaminophen—APAP) part was spun off as a new French company Rhodia...and they sill produce aspirin and APAP around the world, including in China and, I believe, Thailand.

I believe Rhodia may have also bought Dow’s business, but I am not sure when and if the midland Michigan plant was shutdown. It was complicated and I lost track of who is who now in the aspirin producing world. For a while the USA Bayer moved their plant to Mexico, but do not know if it is still in operation.

At 94, perhaps he wanted it so he wouldn't fall out of be a night. lol

If he told the Doc that he would probably have gotten it.

I was reporting what I was told when I worked for Dow in Midland, c. 1961-62.

Perhaps, it wasn't accurate.

Correct. We no longer use it, because when one is ill, it's easy to overdose:

Acetaminophen

Paracetamol toxicity

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Paracetamol toxicity is caused by excessive use or overdose of the analgesic drug paracetamol (called acetaminophen in the United States).

Mainly causing liver injury, paracetamol toxicity is one of the most common causes of poisoning worldwide. In the United States and the United Kingdom it is the most common cause of acute liver failure.[1][2]

Many individuals with paracetamol toxicity may have no symptoms at all in the first 24 hours following overdose. Others may initially have nonspecific complaints such as vague abdominal pain and nausea. With progressive disease, signs of liver failure may develop; these include low blood sugar, low blood pH, easy bleeding, and hepatic encephalopathy. Some will spontaneously resolve, although untreated cases may result in death.

Damage to the liver, or hepatotoxicity, results not from paracetamol itself, but from one of its metabolites, N-acetyl-p-benzoquinoneimine (NAPQI). NAPQI depletes the liver's natural antioxidant glutathione and directly damages cells in the liver, leading to liver failure. Risk factors for toxicity include excessive chronic alcohol intake, fasting or anorexia nervosa, and the use of certain drugs such as isoniazid.
