WASHINGTON (AP) -- Nine Army officers are being reprimanded for leadership failures in connection with the shooting rampage at Fort Hood, Texas, and their failure to detect and report problems with the accused shooter, Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, as he moved along in his medical career.

Saying that although no single event directly led to the tragedy, Army Secretary John McHugh found that certain officers failed to meet expected standards, an Army statement said Thursday. The officers - all lieutenant or above - will receive punishments ranging from an oral reprimand to the far more serious written letter of censure that is considered a career-ender.

I had an Article when I was a first-term Airman. A bit rebellious, I was, but it wasn't the end of the world. My boss was on my side, didn't think I deserved what I got, long story and all that. Still made E-7, mostly due to a lot of studying for promotion. Wasn't much of an award winner.

One of my Chiefs had an Article when he was a youngun. He made E-9, although it was rare to climb out of that hole and go all the way like he did. He was a pretty good guy.

There was a certain amount of redemption allowed, for us enlisted guys anyway, in the AF, as long as you worked hard and didn't screw up too much.

They probably would have been reprimanded for sounding the alarm. Damned if they did, damned if they didn’t.

Right on. You can just imagine his rater conniving, begging and calling in favors to get that Moslem out of his unit. Damned if they leaned on him, damned if they didn't. Isn't PC a great idea!!!

A Pentagon review last year found that Hasan's supervisors at Walter Reed Army Medical Center where he worked expressed serious concerns about his questionable behavior and poor judgment but failed to heed their own warnings. It said the Army psychiatrist's supervisors continued to give him positive performance evaluations that kept him moving up through the ranks despite worries about his strident views on Islam and worries about his competence.

When the shootings first happened, there were news reports that [while at Walter Reed] he was assigned to give a presentation within his specialty. Instead, he gave a rambling talk about how it was the duty of all good Muslims to kill Infidels ...

His behavior was reported immediately to superiors by other personnel who had attended the presentation - the superiors DID NOTHING !!!

My guy, cold-cocked a luie and threw him up on his shoulders on a hot mission because the guy did not (really did not) know the difference of E or W.

He was taking his squad in the opposite direction of the 9 line. There was no time to lose and no time to debate. He was right but he was wrong so...hey what can you do?

What medical specialty seems to attract more than it’s share of wackos?

Years ago, a college prof told me that a high percentage of those who go into the psychology profession are doing so to find out what's wrong with themselves... Experience tells me it's so...

Well LOL I don’t the difference between E or W or the 9 line either, you’d have to explain that to me. But I know what cold-cocking a louie on a hot mission means. Yeah, that cold-cocking of officers is generally frowned upon. Even if it had to be done.

Nine line, NBC contamination. First Gulf War, by chance? Don’t know your timeline. Spent a few months over there in 96 and 97. Saddam rattled his saber at us a bit, had to go to MOPP 2 for a while, but no big deal. He didn’t shoot at us. I had it easy. My 20-year career was a bit strange in that way, we never got into anything too messy. Kept expecting it, didn’t happen. Who knew?

You are bringing back some...odd...memories.

That MOPP stuff. Wow. And the Liberals think Waterboarding is bad. HORRIBLE!

Put one of those terrorists in a MOPP suit for a couple hours. He will be begging to be waterboarded!

BTW, I just want to say off the side or whatever, it is fun, enjoyable engaging (speaking with you).

Maybe our nomenclature was different than yours? We made up our own Mobb checklists pertaining to the equipment involved. Don’t remember any of the line stuff you’re talking about. Plus,it’s over a decade in the past, and my memory fades....we were comm, not infantry. Big difference. In some ways, admittedly, our wartime training was lacking. We didn’t spend much time with M-16, our chemwar and first aid training was once a year for a few hours....

This lay at the feet of the Generals, who by way of their Washington connections collared all our military brass to lay out the party line to be towed—political correctness, or else. These officers played the only cards dealt to them by the higher ups, and are now in the bag while General Casey and the DC generals keep their cocktail hour right on time unencumbered. Disgusting.

I will never forget the outrageous statements of General Casey to the media on the day of the shooting. Sickening then and still is.

I talked to a Chief I worked with before I retired, a few years ago. Some of his Airmen were sent to Iraq for convoy duty. He said they came back pretty rattled. In general, our guys were just not trained to handle that kind of stuff, like Marines or Army infantry are. We have our Security Police who train for Air Base Ground Defense, they get some pretty good combat training, and of course the Pararescue guys who go hardcore like the Green Berets or the SEALS, but in general, no, we do not get the hardcore training.

I deployed to Fort Drum for a week once, around 1990, we set up a tac unit, hospital, chow hall, perimeter, sandbag bunkers and all that. OPFOR was seasoned Rangers, the older guys, NCO's. MILES gear. They were using AK's with blanks, but without the muzzle plug. Man does that thing make an impressive muzzle flash at night. And the distinctive sound. Pop-pop-pop, that low cycle rate.

They freaking killed us three times over. Walked right through us. It was quite an eye-opener. You have to be trained for that stuff. We generally weren't.

Why will the Army not reprimand the CIC and top brass for creating this sort of climate in their ranks?

Ok, hey look I really have to hit the rack.
But it was a most entertaining conversation.

I think we could talk for hours.

Ft. Drum?
All I was told about Ft. Drum is that they have 8ft of snow on the ground in the winter. lol

You are a great person, an American patriot. Thank you for your time and your service to this Great country.

Thanks, but nope, at best I'm the most ordinary person you ever met.

My hat will always be off to the combat veterans. They pay the price.
