Judge Extends Ban On Guns In Library(MI)

A local judge extends the ban on open carrying of guns at the Capital Area District Library. We first told you about the battle between the library and a statewide gun rights group a few weeks ago. The preliminary injunction from Ingham Circuit Judge Rosemarie Aquilina bans anyone from openly carrying firearms in the library until at least June.

In February, the library sought the injunction after four people brought weapons into the building. The gun rights group "Michigan open carry" wants to allow the public to bring guns to the library. The judge says she believes the library has the authority to create weapons regulations. Library officials expect a drawn-out court fight, but are happy with this initial ruling.

Lance Werner, CADL Director: "Now that we have the injunction, I feel that we've gone a long way to providing a safe, secure learning environment that people come to expect when they visit the library."

Concealed carrying of weapons is still permitted at the library. Leaders of Michigan open carry say the injunction is blow to everyone's second amendment rights, not just its members.

There is no right to “not be offended” in the Constitution. If the library allows police to open carry guns in its buildings, it should allow peaceful citizens to open carry guns there as well.

What a maroon. Apparently if you can't see the gun it doesn't exist.

Open carry is legal anywhere concealed carry is, except in a vehicle.

I may be wrong, but I don't think a judge can do that. I don't think any city (or elected official) can make the law more stringent than it is; if that were the case, there would be a patchwork of laws that would be impossible to be aware of... I smell lawsuit!!!

ONCE AGAIN -- suing the government to get them off our backs so we can be free to exercise a right. I, for one, am getting so stinking tired of this -- the government's never-ending war on my God-given right to own and carry a firearm....

If you were not aware, the “demonstration” that led to the injunction included the carrying of long guns. I fully support concealed carry and open carry of handguns but just don’t get the reason for the group to have carried long guns.

As long as it's not mounted on a tri-pod, nor is full auto, a long gun is no less legal than a 357 magnum.

I don't see the problem, except, it "offends" some people.

you are correct. that was actually part of the reasoning that she used to ok the ban- since CADL is not a municipality, or any form of government entity, they have the "right" to ban guns.

In the little town where I grew up it wasn’t unusual to walk to hunting grounds. We often stopped at the little grocery store, hardware, post office or even the library carrying a shotgun or rifle.

Fact is that the constitution doesn’t mention needing a reason to carry a weapon.

The police are trained in the handling of guns, the public isn’t. I mean, they know exactly how to shoot the family dog when approaching the wrong house, don’t they??? /sarc

Agreed on the Constitution not requiring a “reason”. The group was wanting to make a point that could have been adequately made without causing alarm with the carrying of long arms. It is possible to be your own worst enemy and cut off your nose to spite your face.

Your speach has caused alarm with me, so I guess we can stop you from speaking by your reasoning. The gov and this library are in the wrong and so is this judge.

This judge needs impeached and tried for treason against the Constitution of the United States of America.

ALL gun laws and regulations are unconstitutional.

I’ll be right over the next time you go to the theater to ensure you are “alarmed” with me yelling “Fire”.
