Whoa...had no idea it was that bad there. From reports I’ve heard it was a little beach damage.

Reminds me of when Shep stood in the street in downtown NOLA after Katrina saying New Orleans got spared the worst of it. Not that it will be THAT bad in Hawaii- just saying first reports..are often inaccurate.

Prayers.

Tsunamis in Hawaii are weird - there have been times when the tsunami is barely noticed on the open coast, but reached 30 feet in funnel shaped bays.

It all depends upon the underwater topography and the shape of the coast.

mayor is asking folks to “ stay home , stay off the roads , let the first responders do their jobs and assess the situation “
Advance tsunami warning system worked very well , evacuations really helped , probably saved lives .

” unless you absolutely , positively HAVE TO travel , stay home “

Meanwhile tourists walking around taking pictures and picking up fish in downtown Kailua-Kona .

At this time , yet another big surge is hitting up & over thew seawall , and now water pulling back revealing the reef .

sucking the lookie-loo’s out ?

Leo, I’m in Hilo. My brother-in-law just bought a condo in the Kona Alii between the Islander Inn and Lava Java. 2nd floor unit. Do you happen to know the surge there? Thanks for your reports thus far.

What is 10th set?

Contrary to how Holywood protrays them a Tsunami is not one huge wave that crashes ashore. It is actually a series of energy waves that hit in multiple waves ones after the other over a period of time.

The 10th set means the 10th energy wave.

Imagine dropping something in your bathtub -- you know how it generates a series of concentric rings/ripples in the water after it hits. That is the same as a tsunami -- each ring/ripple is a wave or 'Set'.

I stand corrected

It is not the energy in the tsunami that increases over distance, the energy actually dissipates from point of origin over a wider arc as the “ripple” travels

But a combination of conditions such as the dynamics of the triggering event and coastal topography and tide, can amplify the effect of the tsunami on some areas, into huge surges or even breaking waves, even after the energy travels thousands of miles

I think what we saw in Sendai was the surge being channeled up a river, which amplified its destructive force on those poor people
