Gang Rape Story Lacked Balance (says NYT public editor)
New York Times ^ | March 11, 2011 | ARTHUR S. BRISBANE

Posted on 03/12/2011 3:22:24 AM PST by reaganaut1

The story quickly climbed The Times’s “most emailed” list but not just because of the sensational facts of the crime involved. “Vicious Assault Shakes Texas Town,” published on Tuesday, reported the gang rape by 18 boys and men of an 11-year-old girl in the East Texas town of Cleveland.

The viral distribution of the story was, at least in part, because of the intense outrage it inspired among readers who thought the piece pilloried the victim.

My assessment is that the outrage is understandable. The story dealt with a hideous crime but addressed concerns about the ruined lives of the perpetrators without acknowledging the obvious: concern for the victim.

While the story appeared to focus on the community’s reaction to the crime, it was not enough to simply report that the community is principally concerned about the boys and men involved – as this story seems to do. If indeed that is the only sentiment to be found in this community – and I find that very hard to believe – it becomes important to report on that as well by seeking out voices of professional authorities or dissenting community members who will at least address, and not ignore, the plight of the young girl involved.

Let’s consider the particulars:

The story by James C. McKinley Jr. reported that residents of the town noted the girl dressed “older than her age,” wore makeup and fashions “more appropriate to a woman in her 20s” and hung out with older boys at the playground.

The story also quoted one resident, saying, “Where was her mother? What was her mother thinking?”

Referring to some of the defendants in the case, the same resident was quoted saying, “These boys have to live with this the rest of their lives.”

The Times sympathizes with child rapists when they are black.

A British newspaper, the Daily Mail, does a better job of reporting the story: Horrific gang rape of 11-year-old girl sparks racial tension as all the accused are black and the victim Hispanic .

It’s in their official stylebook that black on white, hispanic, asian crime is to be attributed to George Bush and white racism.

( Also the desire of most of the Times male staff to want to be gang rapped by black men, and if possible at a chic local. )

The muslim approach seems evident here, if the female hadn't been born a female she would not have been raped, it is all her fault!

There is something drastically lacking or warped in any male who can take part in something like this. None of them should walk free, ever again.

This kind of reporting caused violence. People learn that justice must be sought through one’s own means.

18 bullets. And send the bill to the local community organizer.

I read about this story yesterday when it was reported in a local Texas newspaper.

I was appalled by some of the comments made by locals who felt too much was being made of this rape. All the males involved in the gang rape are black, and some in the black community of this small town of 8,000 insisted that white men rape little black girls all the time - and get away with it!

Some would still say that these fine youths are simply reacting to the injustices of a White Man’s world, where the cards are invariably stacked against them.

I say that this is what you get when, through the dummying down of public schools, the empowering of the NEA, the embracing of criminal culture, and the installation of sweeping transgenerational welfare and housing programs, you rob people of their basic pride and decency.

This girl is a victim of much more than rape.

I don’t object to this story being reported, I just object to the headline. The headline works to diminish the crime, and I think that type of reporting causes people to grab their guns, in the pursuit of justice.

maybe McKinley, the original writer of the story could have his 11 y old daughter gang raped by 18 black men so he could lament their reputations.

Liberal pukes like this make me wish I could meet them face to face in an alley so I could show them the label on the bottom of my boot.

BINGO!!!!

Our society is doomed due to the level of stupidty in people under the age of 30!

I am amazed daily when dealing with this age group!

And Quannell X, a local Jess Jackson wannabe, is already out screaming RACISM!

Put him in stocks and flog him while they’re hanging these 18 (and more, I don’t think that is the final number) in the town square.

Rape is a capital crime in Texas.

The fact that prominent “black leaders” are excusing, even justifying this is scary, it is the kind of multiculturism most damaging to society. I don’t care if 11 year old girls run around the streets naked, screaming “take me” there is no way a child that age can give moral or legal consent, not in our culture and society anyway.

That's when the gagging starts

Those who insist that too much was made of the story seem to have no higher expectations of young black men; here in the northeast it got so bad you’d have news stories detailing a robbery, and police asking people to call this or that number with tips, then only giving a height and clothing description of the perps - race is deliberately omitted!

Those in denial may want to continue Obama’s illusion that there is a non-white alliance, which is just that: an illusion.

“Our society is doomed due to the level of stupidty in people under the age of 30!”

Well, they were tech-savvy enough to take and distribute photos of the gang-rape (despite the fact that they probably can’t read “The Three Little Pigs”).

We had the “schoolyard shootings” up here in Newark a few years ago, where Hispanics (including at least one illegal) shot some black high school kids in a playground one night for no apparent reason. While it bothered the community because the victims seemed to be decent people, nobody even asked why the shooters did it; it is to be expected. Despite all the PC nonsense and news blackouts, most people here in NJ know there are many areas you just can’t be in after dark (and too often at mid-day).

The observation that larger forces are at work, if it stops there, ignores the elements of choice and responsibility that the people involved exercised. The “boys” chose to attack and pile on; the girl chose to exercise some age-inappropriate ideas about couture (well, at least she wasn’t gay). Of course this is the end to which the liberal mindset tends — man, or humanity, has no real role but to be driven about in a maelstrom of forces no more resistible than was the Japanese tsunami. The NYT outed itself, again.
