Why Gingrich Can't Win
Townhall.com ^ | March 13, 2011 | Steve Chapman

Newt Gingrich has a lot going for him if he decides to run for president -- a famous name, a record of accomplishment, a knack for raising money and a rhetorical flair that appeals to his party's conservative base. It's almost enough to make you forget his central handicap, which is that he is Newt Gingrich.

Succeed Barack Obama in the White House? Given his latest news making, he has a better chance of replacing Charlie Sheen in "Two and a Half Men."

The chief problem is not that Gingrich has been through two divorces and is married to a woman with whom he was having an affair while married to his second wife. Last week, he did himself no good by attributing his lapses to excessive work and patriotism. But Americans don't care that much about sexual probity in politicians.

They elected Bill Clinton after Gennifer Flowers came forward to say she had an affair with him. Following his impeachment over the Monica Lewinsky affair, he left office with the highest approval rating of any outgoing president going back to Dwight Eisenhower.

No, Gingrich suffers from a worse flaw: He is a demagogue, and demagogues don't get elected president of the United States. They get TV attention, they sometimes get big crowds, they even win the occasional primary. But their only essential function is to fail.

in the end, they will nominate either him or someone equally repugnant

Alas, you are right, sport. The problem is with our uninformed Republican primary voters.

The GOP base does. It wont nominate a guy on his third wife.

Unless you redefine brilliant to mean stupid, he’s not exactly brilliant.

But you’re right. We don’t trust him.

I agree with your take on Newt if he actually follows through with a presidential run. He will influence the debate and educate a lot of voters about how the govt is run and what it takes to run it. Also, it is something to do. Having been a big fish in a little pond it takes some doing to stay out of the excitement of the political swirl. The presidential candidate can live well and rub shoulders with movers and shakers as well as the ordinary citizen so that is a plus for a political lifer such as Newt. I like Newt but would not vote for him because he is easily swayed by proximity to liberal power. He probably does not see this in himself but I perceive it as a major weakness in going against the anti American forces now in control of this country. He does not need to be president to make his mark for the good of this Republic.

And I'm truly baffled by your entire post.

You're correct about Mitt, but didn't go far enough.

Palin has far more experience than Newt, and as far as "polarizing" goes, Newt owns that title and has done, for decades.

"Newt has some flaws.........." SOME? He has more "flaws" than just about any present pol or wannabe, with the exception of Charlie Rangle, Barry Obama, and a very few others. No, "most" of his huge trip-ups didn't happen 15 years ago! And stop making patently ridiculous excuses for the idiotic DeDe cock-up.

Huckabee? You imagine that the Huckster could beat Obama? REALLY..............based on what? Whilst a governor, he was Bill Clinton lite; oh hell, he was worse than Slick Willie. And his current siding with Michelle Obama and being in favor of Federal NANNYISM doesn't help his supposed "likability".

The ease with which you have made the judgment about those of us underestimating/dismissing Newt, just proves that it is you, who has little comprehension of Newt's history, flaws, past comments, and actions, which destroyed him,at least politically, unto his dying breath. The MSM and the others who throw their hats into the ring, will destroy Newt within a month or two of hid entering the fray; should he even do so.

And for those who keep stating that Newt is just oh so brilliant and a thinker who "thinks outside of the box", I have two words for you........ALVIN TOFFLER. When Newt was Speaker, he touted this guy and his books. I had, long before that, read three of them, "FUTURE SHOCK", "THE THIRD WAVE", and "POWERSHIFT". The last in that series was the least worthwhile ( I'm being kind ) and was the one that Newt was pushing. It was then, that my once favorable vision of Newt began to rapidly crumble. Newt may know history, but he easily falls for all kinds of really stupid theories ( MAN MADE GLOBAL WARMING )and goes out there like some demented prophet, hawking these crazy ideas.

Dear Newt:

You go along with Big Green. You favor amnesty. Republicans neither like nor support you as a presidential candidate.

Go open a bed & breakfast or give cruise ship lectures. We’re busy trying to save the country from Obama.

Signed,

Reality

Newt: Everyone thinks it has something to do with a furtive little squeaky-voiced lizard, but actually "Newt" is short for "Neutered."

Which is what the GOP would be with him at the head of the ticket. Come to think of it, since the RINOs run the show, and they are eunuchs, Neut, or Newt as he prefers to be called, would be perfect for the low testosterone RNC. They can chat about Green Jobs and Global Warming.

Hey how about a Barbour - Gingrich ticket? 600 lbs of total bullshiite for just one primary vote. Quite the bargain.
It could mean big money for that other castrato, Karl Rove, too. Neut. Karl. Haley. Join hands and GoTF away. And take Mike Steele with you.

The American people will not elect a man who has a female voice to be Commander in Chief. Newt can't help his body chemistry, but he is doomed.

Newt should endorse Sarah!

NY 23, He endorsed the same candidate as did ACORN in that race. The candidate was so liberal, that when she dropped out, she endorsed the Democrat.

He made global Warming hoax commercials with Nancy Pelosi.

Good summary.

I’ll just add that if a man can’t keep his oath to the person he swore one to before God, how can anyone trust him with the smaller things?

He sold us out and we do care about his private life.

Oh, please. ScumRats floated some turgid General Hospital liestory about him being heartless and mean to a dying woman.

HOW MANY stories like that have the 'Rats retailed about solid Republican conservatives? Ronnie? Sarah? They'll do it every time! They'll make stuff up!
