AJDABIYAH, Libya, March 13 (Reuters) - Moammar Gadhafis troops seized the strategic Libyan oil town of Brega on Sunday forcing rebels to retreat under a heavy bombardment while world powers considered imposing a no-fly zone.
Losing Brega and its refinery further limits rebel access to fuel after the insurgents were pushed out of Ras Lanuf on Sunday, another major oil terminal some 100 km to the west along the coast road where all of Libyas important towns are located.

It’s kinda creepy, but for a few months now I’ve said that it feels like it is August of 1939. Are we now in September?
I not going to dump on Obama but the West sure has been a disappointment.
Thanks maggief.
And thanks Gaddafi — you saw to it that Obama lost, and that he’s now a bi-loser!
The whole thing looks like a gang war.

Muammar Gaddafi’s forces were routing Libyan rebels in the east of the country today, driving the revolutionaries into full retreat from the town of Brega with a rain of rockets and shelling.
The rebel army fled in hundreds of pick-up trucks, many with machine guns mounted on the back, and saloon cars back toward the nearest major town of Ajdabiya. Some of the revolutionaries, many of whom are young men with no previous combat experience, appeared close to panic. Many of the remaining civilians in the area fled with them.

Set to depart Washington on Sunday, Clinton also will be meeting with officials in post-revolt Egypt and Tunisia to promote democratic reform.
With Libya embroiled in near civil war and the Obama administration still undecided on possible military intervention, Clinton plans to see foes of Moammar Gadhafi in Paris on Monday to assess their capabilities and intentions.
I really think the West wants Ghaddafi to win and destroy the Rebels.
One thing we do not know is what the Rebels agenda is. For all we know it could be part of the Islamic Caliphate that radical Islam is working towards.
In that case, it might be better to have the enemy you know in place rather than the enemy you don’t know.
Israel could have destroyed Arafat years before. But they chose not to. Could be same thing here.
You may be right. Perhaps the Devil we know is preferable to the Devil we don’t know.
“the devil we know”
Exactly. That`s the point I`ve been making all along..The prospect of Gaddafi winning and holding power is ugly. The prospect of radical islamists coming to power is far uglier.
We don`t have the political juice or the resources to press our objectives there. Someone else needs to take the lead on this one. It`s not our fight. With our troops engaged in a bitter fight in Afghanistan, drug cartels taking over swaths of American land in the southwest and our border leaking like a sieve, we don`t need yet another military adventure.
“You may be right. Perhaps the Devil we know is preferable to the Devil we dont know.”
I agree, and I kind of like the guy anyway (aside from that Pan Am bombing). Whether we like to admit it or not, women have more human rights under him than they do in practically any other Arab state.
The longer we wait to intervene the more extensive our intervention will have to be to make any difference.
I don’t care about some imaginary Caliphate. I care about protecting the American people from terrorism. Muamar Gadaffi was personally responsible for the bombing of Pan Am 103 (Lockerbie Bombing). If an atheist dictator kills American civilians then he is my enemy. If a Muslim wants their country to be ruled in a way that is compatible with Islam but doesn’t harm Americans then they are not my enemy.
That is why this is supposed to be a war against Terror and not a war against Islam, which is what some people seem to want.
That said, I agree with you that there are people in the western political establishment and governments that are rooting for Gadaffi. It is a documented fact western governments including our own have supplied weapons to Gadaffi and facilitated the hiring of mercenaries as well as protecting mercenaries from prosecution.
I don’t think that the American government is acting in the interests of the safety of the American people when it does these things.
“I really think the West wants Ghaddafi to win and destroy the Rebels.”
You know that’s what 0 wants!
Libyan revolutionaries have reportedly regained the control of the strategic oil town of Brega after heavy fighting with forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi.
"We have captured 20 of Gaddafi's forces and we killed 25. We have forced them to retreat 20 km from the town," Reuters quoted Colonel Hamed al-Hasi, a spokesman for opposition forces, as saying on Sunday. This is while the opposition forces had earlier pulled out of the town when they came under heavy shelling.
Fresh attacks by Gaddafi forces come after a spokesman for the Libyan military, Colonel Milad Hussein, said on Sunday they would continue the fight to regain control of cities from what he called "terrorists."
