The North Dakota Senate voted today to approve legislation ordering UND to retain its controversial Fighting Sioux nickname and Indian-head logo.
The vote was 28-15 with four senators absent and not voting, and came after a massive e-mail lobbying campaign that senators said heavily favored approval.
The bill, passed earlier by the House on a 65-28 vote, goes now to Gov. Jack Dalrymple, who said he will sign it.

This bill puts the school at loggerheads with the NCAA, so now everyone will see if the NCAA expels them, or caves and lets them keep their mascot, or tries some meeching half measure, like forbidding them from displaying or referring to their mascot during athletic events. That is, you may have to keep it, but you can’t use it.
The NCAA (ironically headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana) are going to be upset.
The only people upset buy these nicknames are the liberal, white crackers. It doesn’t bother any of the Indians that I know. They wear a lot of these logos on their hats and jackets.
Exactly. It’s only insulting to people who are perenially insulted about something or other.
Would these whiners be insulted if their picture were on a dollar bill? That’s considered a compliment, is it not?
That's what the NCAA did with Central Michigan University - the Chippewas.
As I understand it, the Sioux license their name and collect revenue.
Who got their panties in a wad over this? I’ve heard for years the American Indians never had a problem with it.
As with most things like this some nanny stater threw a tantrum but in this case those who usually give in decided to openly ignore on it purpose as they should.
The Indians are also proud that their names are used for the helicopters in Attack Helicopter units in the U.S. Army.
On this Selection Sunday it’s another timely opportunity to point out that the NCAA long ago exceeded their charter in letter and spirit. They are (and should be) an organizing and sanctioning body for leagues and/or championships but absolute power has had its usual corrupting influence and they now fancy themselves righters of societal wrongs including (gasp) logos and nicknames.
An organization made up of so-called educators was always going to be on the vanguard of the PC movement and they never fail to disappoint.
The whiney little bitches who complain about this are not Indians at all. Indians does whine about things honoring them.

Please make a note of this: it is not Indians that are “offended” by these nicknames. It is PC liberals. They are using the NCAA to enforce their brand of political correctness on normal people.
It’s been about ten years since Seattle University changed their team name from Chieftans to Redhawks - I don’t know what was offensive about the first one.
This was given a lot of momentum by the late Myles Brand who ironically fired legendary Coach Bobby Knight when he was president of IU.
