Has the influence of cable news peaked?

That's the conclusion of PEWs Project for Excellence in Journalism. According to their 2011 State of the News Media study all four cable networks saw their prime-time audiences fall in 2010.

MSNBC, Fox, HLN, and CNN lost between 39,000 and 331,000 viewers as cable -- the fourth most popular platform for news -- showed signs of becoming less important.

Fox News lost a whopping 11% of its prime time viewers (234,000 viewers), but that's not even the worst performance of the cablers.

See who lost the most viewers >>

How many former FNC viewers now watch Fox Business Channel?

My wife and I hardly ever watch FNC anymore.

Bill Kristol, Fred Barnes, and Charles Krauthimmer, are the intellectual giants. All others are either eye candy or heads of little value.

There is so much real NEWS that could be broken just by investigation and uncovering Obama’s past.

Non of the liberal news networks will do it.

Fox could. But for some reason, they won’t.

I don’t watch O’Reilly any more. His idiotic blame of “speculators” for gas prices, his dissing of “birthers” and his belief in global warming indicate to me that he’s a fool.

Why watch a fool?

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I have completely given up on cable news. Even when my husband and I travel, we will watch Hulu or we surf the net for news.

I have given up on talk radio as well. The **only** time I will listen is if I am sewing or painting a room.

What did it for me was Fox's DESPICABLE non-coverage of Obama’s eligibility. I simply can not stand to even hear Beck or OReilly’s voices. The whole crew are **traitors** from top to bottom! I will **nver** forgive them.

Because Fox news is looking more like Tabloid News Channel.

or it could be cuz people are just getting rid of cable/satellite because it is an overpriced medium of news and entertainment distribution. My wife and I just this past weekend dumped cable in favor of netflix and the internet. $58 per month instead of $110. I’m sure we’ll find something else to do with the extra $600 per year that yields in spendable money...

The BEST 5 people at Fox (in no particular order):

Chris Wallace, Neal Cavuto, Megan Kelly, Bret Behr, and Cheesehead Greta. Martha is pretty good. Also Herridge. Most of their field reporters are decent.

I just don’t like the people building their own little empires on Fox’s foundation.

Whatever you may think of Bill O'Reilly and Glenn Beck, Fox News is doing just fine. Fox News enjoyed a nice growth spurt the last few years but it can't continue indefinitely. With so many sources available for news (and commentary) and the poor economy (cable TV is a luxury for some) it's inevitable that even the leading cable news network would lose some of it's audience. CNN lost even more and MSNBC is so far down in numbers that even a small loss has a major impact for them. Keep in mind that broadcast TV has lost viewers, too...a lot of them, in fact and many to cable news, specifically, Fox News. The reality is that all the major TV outlets - broadcast and cable - are going to see some shrinkage in their audiences as the economy contracts and the sources for news expand. We can blame Beck and O'Reilly if that makes anyone feel better but I doubt personalities had all that much to do with any viewer loses incurred by Fox News.

Don't forget that Fox mostly speaks of the Tea Party in the 3rd person. Special Report nightly at 6 PM, they only have moderate Republicans on their panel, again the Tea Party is only referenced in the Third person.

I still tune in to Special Report, but more often then not, I just end up yelling at the tv, not quite sure why they do not allow Tea Party/Social Conservatives on their panels, same goes for FNS.

Jonah Goldberg comes on occasionally, but this is the guy that said the Republican Party needs to move away from it`s family values platform.

Bill Kristol is no longer on the same side I am on, pains me to say this because I was always a fan.

Not that I would trust PEW or any poll for that matter, they are ALL liars, but I watch Fox less and less.

Now for full disclosure I still have it on several hours a day.

Fox does not represent Social Conservatives/ Tea Party as far as I can tell. How they are called a right wing network???

Bring on Steve Maltzberg, give him Bill O time slot, yes the ratings would be very good.

Social Conservatives really do not have a voice on Fox other than Hannity, Bill O is not a Conservative.

>> Two reasons why Fox is losing viewers... Beck and Bill O’Reilly

ALL teevee news sucks. All of it. Even Fox News. We have friends who keep foxnews on every hour they’re awake. Drone drone bla bla bla. It makes me tired.

Hey, I sound like Frantzie now! :-) But it’s true. FoxNews may suck *less* than the others, but it still sucks big.

Agree ...and Gretta is inconsistent at best. At least two days out of five (often more) she leans heavily to the left.

Fox News has great potential to be the "other voice" we have so desperately needed, but they move ever more leftward ...and call it "fair and balanced."

Just this morning, I'm watching coverage of the situation in Wisconsin wherein the law has been passed and now needs to be implemented (I really don't give a rat's a$$ how many demonstrators there are in Madison).

They have the state senate majority leader who gives a reasoned and factual state of affairs going forward, and the newscaster tells us (almost panting) ..."and now for the other side."

How often do we get that when The One gives his never-ending diatribes about anything?

Lets not forget they have had Alan Colmes on a lot more lately too.

I can’t watch him either.

I wish they’d put ‘Redeye’ on at a more reasonable hour.
If they put that show on at 11pm EST it would give Leno/Letterman a run for their money.

Stopped watching O’Really, Hannity, Greta, Shep months ago.
Love FoxBusiness still - although I wish the Judge would stop yelling so much
