N.R.A. Declines to Meet With Obama on Gun Policy
New York Times ^ | March 15, 2011 | JACKIE CALMES

Posted on 03/15/2011 4:36:58 AM PDT by Second Amendment First

More than two months after the Tucson shootings, the administration is calling together both the gun lobby and gun safety groups to find common ground. But President Obama has no plans to take the lead in proposing further gun control legislation, aides say, and the nation’s major gun rights group is snubbing the invitation.

On Tuesday, officials at the Justice Department will meet with gun control advocates in the first of what will be a series of meetings over the next two weeks with people on different sides of the issue, including law enforcement, retailers and manufacturers, to seek agreement on possible legislative or administrative actions.

The effort follows Mr. Obama’s call, in a column on Sunday in a Tucson newspaper, to put aside “stale policy debates” and begin “a new discussion” on ways to better enforce and strengthen existing laws to keep mentally unstable, violent and criminal people from getting guns.

But the National Rifle Association, for decades the most formidable force against proposals to limit gun sales or ownership, is refusing to join the discussion — possibly dooming it from the start, given the lobby’s clout with both parties in Congress. Administration officials had indicated they expected that the group would be represented at a meeting, perhaps on Friday.

“Why should I or the N.R.A. go sit down with a group of people that have spent a lifetime trying to destroy the Second Amendment in the United States?” said Wayne LaPierre, the longtime chief executive of the National Rifle Association.

He named Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, who has almost no role in gun-related policies, and Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr.

Speaking of ignoring Obama...I had a dream last night that Benjamin Netanyahu and Rome not only refused to acknowledge Obama as the legit President of the United States because he failed to prove his citizenship status but Benjamin Netanyahu warned him to step down and the Israeli army protected us until Sarah Palin won in November.

Pure, unadulterated bullsh1t. Obama wants to cut the legs out from under the NRA, and make it look like he’s doing them (us) a favor.

Our president is as phony as a three dollar bill - or, for that matter, his “Hawaiian” birth certificate.

Exactly.

In this case, what the Kenyan Clown is up to is simple enough: he wants to ban all private sales of firearms.

There is nothing to discuss with the gun-grabbers here.

President Obama has no plans to take the lead...

Obama refuses to take the lead on anything. He votes "present" just as he did as a Senator in Illinois. No real budget proposals, Pelosi and Reid wrote "obamacare", Libyan crisis, Israeli problems, last year's budget, etc, etc, etc. This man-child will never take the lead.

Obama is a real pofs. Since tucson minorities have killed tons of cops. Has he said a word about that? Has he said a word about the inner city thug ghetto culture where most crime occurs?

No! He chooses to exploit a one in a million situation for purely emotionaLly driven reasons.

Obama is trying to use them as the foil. He wants to either blame them for “unreasonable demands” and let things fail and point the finger or be able to say “even the NRA agrees with my proposals” as a way to shift it on them.

He is too cute by half w his crappola and many see right though this.

Glad I renewed my NRA membership for a couple of more years. They have angered me several times but when push comes to shove you can count on them to show up for the rumble.

I am now to the point that when a liberal speaks I tune them out, turn them off, leave or tell them to STFU, as I can no longer stand the constant lies.

Lets face facts, if you are a Democrat at this point in history you are either too ignorant or too evil to tolerate, and I do not hear you.

The NRA are very politically savvy, as this maneuver proves. Nearly any other person or organization would be gaga over the opportunity to sit down with the President of the United States, even if they thought it would hurt their cause.

I supported the NRA during the last election when they endorsed pro-2nd Amendment Democrats.

Now it’s time to see if this strategy pays off. I’ll eat my words if it doesn’t, but I expect to rub it in everyone’s face who claimed that they renounced their membership if many NRA-backed Democrats join the Republicans in putting a stop to this.

...obama emphasized, “First, we should begin by enforcing laws that are already on the books” — a line long used by the gun lobby.

Hey, hussein obama, here's a crazy idea. How about you apply that same logic/policy to immigration and border security too? You lying, hypocritical, socialist, SOB.

I don't believe a single {expletive} word that comes out of this guy's mouth. I don't trust the government, period. I particularly don't trust the so-called "liberals" in government who (again, hypocritically) want to infringe on my liberties, my right to keep and bear arms.

No meeting. No patina of legitimacy to whatever f'd up plan to further usurp our rights obama and his cohorts in crime come up with.

I equate the whole dialog process that Obama and his minions want to gather for, to the North Koreans and their desire to get everyone to the table so they can show how much of a bully and unbending tyrant the US is...Remember the 6 party talks???

The NRA has everything to lose in talking directly with this administration, and the NRA made the right call...

I hope we only have to suffer the presense of this administration for only another couple of years...

We will be suffering for this congress and administration actions for many generations to come though...We knew that was going to be true...

I have this personal belief that when the day is over, and we are at calm, and reflect upon what we accomplished that day...

We will still have our guns, regardless of what they do or say...I believe everyone needs to make that personal committment, and be prepared to endure the consequenses of not giving them up, for any reason...Regardless of what un-Constitutional law they try to, or pass to take away our right to keep and bear arms...

They are getting desparate, so this renewed effort doesn’t surprise me one bit...

This lying bastard has no interest in the Second Amendment or public safety.

In the Middle Ages, when a local ruler was unpopular, he beat up on the Jews to raise his ratings.

Today, when a liberal official finds himself losing support among his base and the electorate in general, he beats up on the Second Amendment.

NOTHING will stop a determined lunatic from using a gun or anything else to carry out his objective. NOTHING short of a bullet would have stopped the Arizona shooter.

ALL these gun control measures EVER do is whittle away the rights of law abiding Americans to defend themselves and THAT is the ULTIMATE objective of the dictatorial, EXTRA- CONSTITUTIONAL statists like Obama. They fear an armed electorate which could oppose their plans for a force of brown-shirted state political police - Obama’s “Civilian Security Force” to take over government.

I APPLAUDE and SUPPORT the position of the NRA in refusing to meet with these lying bastards.
