Agency official also told a news conference there was a crack in the roof of the reactor building.

The tsunami affected the ability to have electricity and for pumps to work - main source wiped out, back-ups wiped out, backups to backups wiped out and/or exhausted. They are working miraculously with crude, last resort approaches at this point - firetrucks even. There is concern that the impact from dropping sea water from helicopter(s) as done in forest firefighting could damage the spent fuel rods leading to further melting and release of radionuclide, not to mention the high radiation dose that helicopter occupants would be exposed to via steam.
And, no doubt, already those remaining at the plant (70 of 800 before the fires and highest following radiation readings) are risking their health and perhaps lives to some extent as the radiation is hot enough near the reactors that they are working 10 minute shifts, when they can actually be close enough to work in the immediate vicinity.
Positive/Supportive thinking and prayer perhaps could go a long way toward helping.
