This is a NEW fire in reactor 4, folks...

“Around 5:45 a.m., a worker at the plant saw flames on the fourth floor of the reactor’s building, believed to be the same spot where an apparent hydrogen explosion caused a fire Tuesday morning in the wake of last Friday’s magnitude 9.0 earthquake.” - Kyodo reporting: english.kyodonews.jp

The reactor roof not the building that houses the reactor...that was blown off yesterday.

Did u hear the reports of using helicopters to drop water on reactor 4?

If it was not exposed, do u think that would be logical?

NHK reports that 5:45AM Wednesday, a second fire broke out in the same part of the fourth floor as yesterday’s fire. It’s above the area that contains the pumps that supply cooling to the spent fuel rod pool. The local fire department is attempting to put out the fire. The area is too contaminated to get very close. They are considering injecting water from the side with fire engines, or an trying an air drop by helicopter.

Nasty situation.

Call me crazy but I believe 3-15-2011 is still today in the US.

Official statement from the ministry of energy: “We didn’t start the fire. It was always burning since the world’s been turning.”

(I know, this is serious, but we need some comic relief sometimes).

Yes it is 3-15 in the US but it is 3-16 in Japan!

I'd love to have a laugh after I kicked the livin’ $h*t out of who ever thought the pitiful safety design of these power plant was adequate!

Simple oil refinery safety procedures could have prevented all of this!

I’m watching live news from Japan about the fire that broke out 2 hours ago. They are trying to figure out how to fight it.

“Why is a roof crack meaningful?”

—If this article is correct, then spent fuel of the Mark 1 design reactor No. 4 is located as follows:

“This diagram shows where spent fuel pools are located in the boiling water reactor system at Fukushima, a 1970s design by General Electric known as the Mark 1. As the graphic shows, while the spent fuel lies under a deep pool of water, it is outside the concrete-and-steel containment designed to trap radiation leaks.”

—This diagram shows what lies above the pool:

My understanding is this.

There is a crack at the top of the containment structure at Reactor 4.

This hole/crack is allowing steam to escape from the containment area where the spent rods are being stored and cooled.

These rods are not as hot as the those that were active at the time of the earthquake and are much more slowly burning away the water exposing the zirconium cladding at times. When this metal oxidizes it produces Hydrogen.

This gas then escapes out of the breach and reacts with the air and explodes and or catches fire.

That's my understanding, may not be right but that is what i gather.

They cannot get water back up to this area at the moment due to the radiation. If they don't figure it out(helicopter drops aside) they will have a much bigger problem.

“How many nuke sites were involved in Hurricane Katrina?”

Do you really think it would matter? The nuke angle is only the most salacious for the press. In the absence of nukes we would be seeing some other way in which the lefty press corps would use this disaster to push their agenda or at a minimum try to sell the panic angle.

To further my suspicions that panic is being drummed up, our affirmative action Surgeon General’s has advised that West Coast residents stock up on iodide tablets.

No. Reactor 4 is in cold shutdown. There isn’t a containment breach. The fire centers around an open pool containing “spent” fuel rods. The area is too contaminated to enter.

Gee, I don't know , wouldn't it be a good idea to require a large body of water somewhere uphill as a back up in case of no power, need water situation?

Who'd'a'thunk?
