Americans Within 50 Miles Of Fukushima Should Evacuate

Gus Lubin
Mar. 16, 2011, 1:52 PM

The US government just told all citizens within 80 kilometers of Fukushima Nuke Plant to stay indoors or evacuate.

These areas are on radiation watch. Note how close it is to Tokyo.

For some perspective, here's how that radius looks on top of Los Angeles:

The closest reactor to LA is San Onofre.

Can you map one from there?

The No.3 nuclear reactor of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant is seen burning after a blast following an earthquake and tsunami in this handout satellite image taken March 14, 2011. The Fukushima nuclear complex, 240 km (150 miles) north of Tokyo, has already seen explosions at two of its reactors on Saturday (reactor No.1) and on Monday (reactor No.3), which sent a huge plume of smoke billowing above the plant, just days after a devastating earthquake and tsunami that killed at least 10,000 people. Reactors No.1 to No.4 can be seen from bottom to top. Read more: http://www.ibtimes.com/articles/123200/20110316/fukushima-nuclear-power-plants-japan-earthquake-reactors.htm#ixzz1Gmv9Fqq6

The actual warning was to “stay indoors or evacuate”.

what do the headlines say? EVACUATE!

I wonder what the injuries & damages will be due to unnecessary evacuation by panicked Americans?

Anyone publishing weather/wind maps for the area?

News for the science challenged.

I will pass, but then I never bought into anthropomorphic global warming or Chloroflourocarbons either.

Guess it comes with doing your own labs in physics and chemistry, and NBC training during the cold war.

Ignore this advice. Many on this forum have assured us there’s no danger.

This might just be prudence as opposed to panic. Most of the area was devastated by the quake / tsunami in any case. So if you aren't there on a rescue mission one of the best things you can do is get yourself out of the way.

Thanks.

NRC News

NRC PROVIDES PROTECTIVE ACTION RECOMMENDATIONS BASED ON U.S. GUIDELINES

Under the guidelines for public safety that would be used in the United States under similar circumstances, the NRC believes it is appropriate for U.S. residents within 50 miles of the Fukushima reactors to evacuate.

50 miles—HELL!

I’d leave if I were in Tokyo. Radiation is not stopped by some invisible wall at the 50 mile radius border. It’s carried on clouds and delivered with the rain and snow.

People are so ignorant.

“NBC training...”

Ah, good old NBC...No Body Cares!

I did something wrong [no idea what] in my last squadron and ended up as NBC officer. Trying to get anyone interested was an uphill battle.

The only gas mask available for helo pilots in those days was the standard infantry model. Flying with one, especially at night, was a bear.

I asked the CO if I could run a “user evaluation”, document pilot comments and send the results to HQMC. The Colonel said, “Good idea!, have the XO do the first flight.”

The XO returned from the flight, threw his gas mask across the Ready Room and let loose a string of profanity. I handed him my questionnaire and said, “Sir, could you put that on paper for me?” That evaluation project finally got some attention for NBC.

Americans Within 50 Miles Of Fukushima Should Evacuate

Is there some reason that Americans would be affected more than others?

Right...but if they say “EVERYONE—GET THE HELL OUT OF THERE”...can you imagine the results? How do you evacuate everyone from Fukushima to Tokyo—millions of people.

Chaos; Armageddon; Godzilla!

Guess it might be that we flew a global hawk over the site and now have more data then the Japanese are willing to release.

My mistake.

I read from the Business Insider website which quoted “The US government just told all citizens within 80 kilometers of Fukushima Nuke Plant to stay indoors or evacuate.”

http://www.businessinsider.com/map-of-radiation-in-japan-2011-3#ixzz1Gn3uuegI

Thanks for the link to the authoritative source document.
