Ted Poe Republican Texas on CFL lightbulbs

I ran across this video the other day and while watching it, i suddenly realized how a small group of citizens could easily: 1) shut down the federal government, 2) make the govt repeal it's mandate on these lightbulbs, or 3)accomplish both objectives.

If there were accidental breakages of these bulbs in key government buildings daily then they would have to shut down the affected buildings and evacuate them each time for at least a few minutes to comply with EPA regulations. I suggest that the EPA headquarters should be high on the list of priorities for possible accidents with these bulbs.

The last year or so I’ve been stocking up in incandescent bulbs, but after reading this I think I might just have to buy some of these. Maybe they really could be lobbed as a weapon at the greenies, with the taunting reminder of all the mercury contained in them.

A while back there was a story where trash collectors refused to pick up trash that had CFL’s in them. But then, long ago I’ve seen florescent tubes sticking out of trash bins. Is there a difference? Don’t they contain mercury too?

Anyone lobbing the CFL bulbs had better be wearing a full concealment mask because this would be considered as a chemical attack on the US of A by the closest liberal prosecutor. Oh boy, would there ever be a fuss about this kind of attack!

yes, they contain mercury, that terribly dangerous stuff that we as kids carried globs of it around in our pockets and played with it and shined our coins with it etc.

Oh yeah, when reading your post I remember coating quarters in my pocket using mercury. Ok, so what’s the difference in recycling tubes vs those squiggly things? They both contain mercury but the disposal of them is different? I have tubes in my garage and when they’re no longer working I take them to the local hazmat dump and pitch them.

I have advocated a group of harmless looking “tourists” milling around in front of the capital building, then converging and throwing hundreds of these lightbulbs on the steps. That would be awesome!

I guess that the regular fluorescent tubes have no mercury in them. but many years ago in Naval Preventive Medicine School i was taught that those tubes were extremely dangerous because they contained Beryllium which is a very potent poison.

Sounds like a major felony, so wear SEIU tee-shirts and shouts slogans about crackers to get immunity.

Both kinds of Fluorescents contain mercury; the CFLs just contain more.

But I agree with depressed; this is a bad idea if you’d like to remain out of jail.

You missed the point. One will wreak just as much havoc as 100 and you don’t need an assault just Joe Shmoe dropping by his favorite govt bldg on his way home from walmart and accidentally dropping one out of his walmart bag.

No, I get the point, but I was thinking of a way of getting media attention as well as creating an “environmental disaster.”

It is interesting the difference between the two. They’re both dangerous but one, the CFL’s, have to be handled carefully and the tubes not so much.

Yes, incandescents have been banned and it sucks. But NOTHING requires the purchase of CFLs. We’ve replaced all our light bulbs with A9 LEDs. I really like the soft, shadowless glow of the A9 LED bulb. The lumen output is equal to the 40w bulb, but only usees 9 w, and they can be used with dimmer switches, which isn’t the case with CFLs. The incandescent was a step up from the wick lamp, but this romantic clinging to the incandescent when the A9 LED is available, has a lovely soft light, and lasts twenty years for the $20 cost just doesn’t make sense.

The light from incandescents IS romantic, as is the physical warmth on the skin as you draw near. It’s not just about lumens. It’s not even about light or enegry. It’s about freedom, and market forces vs State-controlled regulations “for our own good.”

And, BTW, we like wick lamps a heck of a lot as well. And wood fires.

Poe said the purchase of CFLs is mandatory. That is not true, and there is another alternative besides CFL. That's the only point I'm making.
