Brazil a model for troubled Middle East, says Obama

RIO DE JANEIRO (AFP) – US President Barack Obama held up emerging powerhouse Brazil on Sunday as a model of economic and democratic transformation that leaders in the troubled Middle East should try to copy.

Obama's keynote address in Rio de Janeiro was the highlight of his visit to Brazil, the first stop on a three-nation Latin America tour overshadowed by US-led military action in Libya.

The speech came after France, the United States and Britain launched missile and bomb attacks on Libyan air-defense targets to prevent Moamer Kadhafi's forces from crushing a month-old uprising against his rule.

Obama did not mention the strikes in the speech, but, on his first trip to Latin America as president, made a point of flagging Brazil to Middle Eastern leaders as a golden example of what they could achieve.

"We are seeing the struggle for these rights unfold across the Middle East and North Africa," Obama said, speaking in a famed Rio theater.

...

Brazil endured more than 50 years of of populist and military regimes until 1985, when civilian rule was restored.

Obama, who had earlier toured the notorious "City of God" slum, poignantly recalled how he had watched "Black Orpheus," a movie set in a Brazilian favela, with his mother as a child.

"My mother is gone now, but she would have never imagined that her son?s first trip to Brazil would be as president of the United States," he said to cheers in the crowded Teatro Municipal in Rio.

Among the guests at the event was Rinaldo Gaudencio, a local performer who looks exactly like Obama and has mastered his gestures.

Obama is reported driving through the slums of Rio [like when you drove through the old Cabrini Green in Chi-town and didn't dare stop?] in his black limo, glories in the government's "pacification program", a slum tenant even has her hair done for the "expected" drive-by; but the government housing now given utilities and pacification is still referenced as slums.

The Middle East already has slums..so take government control of them = still slums.

With a population that is 6.84 black, and 0.02% muslim, I can see where it might be a country to be emulated.

The company I am employed with was bought out by a corp. based in Brazil. We've had several people from Brazil facilities come up here to work with us, as well at other facilities in our country. They were to stay for two years, after which they had the option of remaining here or returning home. To a man they all chose to remain in the United States. They have all bought houses and plan on becoming citizens. And I'll add, each has a wife who is drop dead gorgeous.

Are you quoting a recent breakdown? I've seen them where 85% plus of the population claim "Brasilian" ancestry, which is a little of everything.

I've met many Brasilians, but at least half of them had some black ancestry. I've met the descendants of Cabral, which was pretty cool.

” poignantly recalled how he had watched “Black Orpheus,” a movie set in a Brazilian favela, with his mother as a child.”

I’m trying to figure out how and when Barry saw
this very dark foreign film with his mother.
Or why she thought it was appropriate fare for a child.
I remember seeing Disney movies with my parents...
Black Orpheus was filmed in Portuguese in 1959.
Barry was born in 1961.
He moved to Indonesia with his mother at age 6
and returned to Hawaii around age 10,
while his mother remained in Indonesia.
So, he had to have allegedly seen it before he was 6.
But, where ?
If this foreign film was still being shown a few years
after it as made ,
it would have been featured in an art house theater .
Were there any in Honolulu in the early 1960s ?
And the film would have been shown with English subtitles.
Could Barry read them at 6 ??
And if he saw the film with his mother in Jakarta-it would have had Indonesian subtitles.

The middle east would be an economic powerhouse and great place to live if it wasn't full of moslums.

I’m not sure exactly where to start here. I suppose the even more obvious question is, exactly how anyone in the US government, particularly the leader, who has blown through trillions of dollars of money the people don’t actually have, is in a position to suggest behavior to anyone.

Maybe it’s that wherever he was born, he spent a lot of time in Chicago, where you might hear...”Y’know whatcher problem is? I’ll tell ya whatcher problem is...”

From Wikipedia, 2008-

Ethnic groups

48.43% White

43.80% Brown (Multiracial)

6.84% Black

0.58% Asian

0.28% Amerindian

I used to know a guy named Cabral, a Portugese from Mass.

That is Tom Brady, a football player, who seems to have stolen Sean Cassidy’s hair from 1978. He is married to Gisele Bundchen, a Brazilian model.

So... Obama is going to give Middle Eastern countries billions of U.S. taxpayer dollars so they can drill in the Gulf of Mexico too?
