Detroit's population plummeted 25 percent over the past decade amid an economic downturn so severe that Michigan was the only state that failed to gain residents, according to 2010 Census data released Tuesday.

The statistics show that the once-mighty Motor City's population dropped to 713,777 last year, from 951,270 in 2000...

Detroit's population peaked at 1.8 million in 1950, when it ranked fifth nationally.

“”the Detroit pattern”— increasing taxes, harassing businesses, and pandering to unions. In the short run, it got mayors re-elected. In the long-run, it reduced Detroit from a thriving city to an economic disaster area, whose population was cut in half, as its most productive citizens fled.”” THOS. SOWELL..

That’s the good news. The bad news is they’re coming to your town.

Similar drop in Cleveland, Ohio - under 400,000 now. A city that used to have almost 1,000,000 people in the 50’s. And they’re not just moving to the suburbs either.

Due to the fact that no one is left to use many of the parks anymore, last year Detroit floated an idea to sell parks off to raise revenue.

I offered them $18,000 for Comerica Park, but never heard back from the lying jerks.

Now we’ve got unionistas marching in the streets with pictures of Rick Snyder with a hitler moustache and Jenny the Genius is teaching economics in California.

Some areas of Detroit have become some of the best places to deer hunt in MI.

You wouldnt believe it unless you saw it for yourselves.

Comerica park is the only thing in Detroit making any money these days.

It would appear very difficult to keep districts 13 (Clarke) and 14 (Conyers) majority minority.

This has to be hell on their tax base, as I’m sure it wasn’t the leeches leaving town. The 25% that left probably took 35-40% of the tax revenue with them.

Yes but they just took that tax revenue from the rest of the state.

I hope Rick Snyder can do you all some good. Granholm was an obvious dud from day one. Her teaching economics is like Hugh Hefner teaching about the joys of a monogamous relationship. It just does not make sense.

If you would like to be added or dropped from the Michigan ping list, please freepmail me.

713K??? Tchah! Must be that new math. I'd peg that figure as a conservative 30% padding over the actual population.

Democrats never learn; they’ve got one play in their play book, and they run it over and over again until they kill their golden goose.

One would think the politicians in Illinois could figure out what happened to Michigan - we are looking at 50 years of decline, after all - but no, our jackass governor decides he’s going to solve things by raising taxes by 67%. Already businesses and individuals are leaving the state, and the difference between Chicago and Detroit will only be one of timing.

Since there won’t be any power, the last person to leave Detroit won’t have to turn out the lights.

There’s lots of houses selling for $100, $50, and yes, even $1 in Detroit... and no buyers. Why? Because when your neighbors have the morals of the 7th ring of Hell, it’s just not worth it.

Look at the Pontiac Silverdome... what was once a magnificent structure. 35 years after taxpayers spent $55.7 million building the Pontiac Silverdome, it sold for $583,000, and included 127 acres of land. Yes, for the price of a nice house in a nice neighborhood, you can buy 127 acres and a giant domed stadium in Detroit.

Detroit reminds me of one of my favorite sayings in the real estate field. You can sell a house that’s purple with green polka dots, but you can’t sell the house next door.

Rome’s population went from 2+ million in the 1st-2nd Century, to somewhere over 10,000 in the middle ages.

There’s no reason to doubt that Detroit’s population could steadily drop to near zero!
