Dozens of people were killed in Syria on Friday as troops opened fire on protesters in several cities and pro- and anti-government crowds clashed on the tense streets of the capital in the most widespread unrest in years, witnesses said.

The United States called on the Syrian government to stop violence against demonstrators and the arrests of human rights activists, White House spokesman Jay Carney said on Friday.

"We strongly condemn the Syrian government's attempts to repress and intimidate demonstrators," he told reporters.

Eyewitnesses reported at least 15 fatalities in the city's central square, al-Jazeera said. Opposition sources reported heavy clashes near the governor's home in town and said dead and wounded were lying in the streets. Crowds in town set fire to a bronze statue of the country's late president, Hafez Assad, a resident told The Associated Press.

According to AFP, several people were also shot to death in the town of Sanamein, some 40 kilometers north of Deraa. Elsewhere, security forces killed three people in the Mouadamieh district of Damascus, after a crowd confronted a procession of cars driven by supporters of President Bashsar al-Assad, residents said later Friday.

Don’t hold your horses on Obama’s “statement.” The coward all-of-a-sudden can’t speak. Joradn/Syria do NOT have the OIL.

Syria is a puppet partner to Iran, a conduit of hezbollah actions in the region. If Assad goes down, there is a big question mark of who has the power in Syria and Lebanon. Likely hezbollah will grab the reins, but I’m not sure the Syrian people are excited about that.

My understanding is Syria = bad guys; Jordan = good, or at least less bad.

A regime change in Syria would probably be a good thing (less of a down-side, anyhow). A regime change in Jordan might be a bad thing. It all depends on who the rebels are; who's supporting them; and who's likely to actually form the new regime. AFAIK, no one has those answers, or at least they're not saying.

And the UN's response to the Syrian regime's slightly intensified law enforcement practices was to condemn Israel for its 1967 seizure of the Golan Heights, an act of self-preservation if ever there was one.

If I was Obama I’d be on the phone to Assad right now and I’d tell him “Look, if you continue there’s going to be a lot of pressure to come after you next. You and your family are repsonisble for the deaths of hundreds if not thousands of Americans in Iraq. You’ve supported terrorism against the US and Israel for decades. You give support to Hamas and Hezbollah. I don’t know if I can save you. But, I imay be able to. There’s something you’ll have to do for me, though. You know certain things. I want to know them. Where in Damascus are Mesahaal and the other Hamas leaders? Where are Nasrallah and the other Hezbollah leaders in Beirut and Baalbek? I want coordinates, maps, addresses, phone #s, email accts, everything. Tell me everything you know about Iran. Tell me everything you’ve heard about the whereabouts of Osama Bin Laden and other AQ leaders. If you do this, I can make it so you stay in power. If not, I suggest you read the Book of Daniel because the writing is on the wall, Bashar. I’ll call back in a few hours. Hopefully you’ll have th information at your disposal.”

This could be a great opportunity to get ahold of some very valuable information.
