With incandescent bulbs being phased out under federal law in favor of energy-efficient compact fluorescents, legislators want to exempt South Carolina from the measure, saying Washington has no business telling the state how to light its closets and countertops.
The proposed state law, called the Incandescent Light Bulb Freedom Act, “allows South Carolina to say to the federal government we are going to exercise our rights,” said Republican state Rep. Bill Sandifer, a co-sponsor.
The federal government is phasing out incandescent lights starting with 100-watt bulbs in 2012. In 2014, manufacturers will stop making 75-, 60- and 40-watt bulbs, too, under the 2007 Bush administration law.

This is an interesting strategy that the state of South Carolina is taking. I wonder if they can go a bit further and “ban” the new CFL light bulbs in the entire state? The new CFL light bulbs have mercury in them and are a waste removal headache. It seems to me that states should have the right to “ban” them for that reason alone.
Stock up now...all those econazis will fight to the death to deny you your freedom of choice!
I am now the proud owner of 6 of the approved lightbulbs, which have expired. One of them “smoked” on the way out, btw. Wonder how much mercury I inhaled.
I have no idea what to do with them.

These new bulbs are pure crap. I told my wife not to buy the d*mn things until completely necessary. Stupid moronic “we know what’s best for you consumer” Bullcrap.
I say box em up and ship to your congressperson. let them dispose of these dim wit bulbs.

Take them to your local sierra club. They’re accepted lightbulbs, old tires, refrigerators, fire ants and snakes. If the building is closed, toss the stuff through a closed window or door.
Use 200 watt or 150 watt three way and all is well.

I dropped one of the new bulbs on the floor. Instead of calling the haz-mat team, I just swept it up like we used to sweep up thermometers that had broken. When we were kids, it was fun to chase those little balls of mercury around the floor, and here I am at age 86 and I can’t see any long-term problems because I did that.

EXACTLY what my wife said when I read another thread on this subject to her last week.
I remember as a kid playing with the mercury as well. I recall we used popsicle sticks to mess it around, and then nudge the little balls of mercury towards one another, and then they’d all of a sudden go into a big ball at the bat of an eye.
To a kid it was fun. Passing the time on a rainy day.
I carefully wrapped mine in some heavy plastic sheeting, bagged them in plastic, and dumped them.
I bought a house where the former owners were in love with them. They had CFLs almost everywhere.
One of them went out. I took it out of the socket and noticed that the base was all scorched. "Uh-Oh", I said, "Wonder if there's a problem with the fixture?". So, I took the other two out (it was a three bulb fixture)....sure enough, all three bulbs had the same scorching.
Being an engineer, and an anal-retentive one to boot..... I checked the rest of the CFL bulbs in the house. Sure enough, all of them were scorched. We're now a CFL-free house. It's been almost a year and I've not had a lick of trouble with the incandescents. Haven't had to replace any of them yet, either.
Now, I've no idea if there was a problem with the CFL bulbs, or if they were cheap ones, or what. I couldn't read the brand off the the base, it was too badly smoked. But, I'm not going to put my house (and family!) at risk like that, just to save a few cents apiece on the electric bill.
I'm waiting for the LED bulbs to come down in price. I like them. I also like the idea of them - replace them once, and I'll likely never need to do it again.
these bozos in Washington just didn’t learn their lesson with the 55 MPH speed limit...
The Home Depot near me is actually selling incandescents by the case. I got mine.
Yep, got my stash too ... actually I figured out how many light bulbs I use in a year, then took a rough guess at how long I’ll live (barring the beer truck) then doubled it. You really don’t have to stash that many bulbs.
To me, it’s the freedom of CHOICE. I actually use the mercury-laced ones in some circumstances. Outside lighting for instance (porch lights, etc). They are great ... cheap and give off sufficient light. But in my home, I want “real” light bulbs. So I CHOOSE to use them on the porch and I choose NOT to use them by my reading chair. It’s MY CHOICE that’s at risk here. (Shame on George Bush ... he fell for the greenie BS too.)
