Are the glory days over for Apples (AAPL) iPhone?
Market researcher IDC thinks so.
In its smartphone forecast released Tuesday, IDC sees Apples global market share hitting a plateau of 15.7% in 2011. It sees Apples share of the market dipping to 15.3% by 2015.
IDC predicts that Apples smartphone sales will grow at a compound annual rate of 18.8% from 2011 to 2015, while the overall market grows at 19.6%.

Kinda like the US under Mr. Obama’s leadership.
BTW, I don’t buy the argument in this piece. Apple is one of the few large companies in this world that is superb at seeing over the horizon.
I would never write Apple off. They are a dynamic company.
However, just this morning on the Las Vegas local news, the anchorette was saying:
“I just got my iPad2. I have my iPhone 4. I am 100% updated.”
Then, the anchor hands her a piece of paper about the iPhone 5 speculation and she sighs.
The point of this story is that if you own an iPad, you might not need to update your phone as rapidly. Perhaps you can skip a generation or two, especially if the iOS keeps updating.
The updating of two devices every year will not sit with consumers in the long-run.
However, consumers need to be smarter about their own personal "IT recaps." I personally can't see buying each new version of a device as they roll out. I used to buy a new laptop every two years or so for a variety of reasons. But my personal fiscal circumstances will not allow that right now. And frankly, I have no need to do so.
No need to update every new model. I’m quite happy with my 3GS. Might upgrade to a 5, not sure.
“IDC predicts that Apples smartphone sales will grow at a compound annual rate of 18.8% from 2011 to 2015, while the overall market grows at 19.6%.”
Sorry folks, IDC is not that good. They are predicting the end of Apple based on a 0.6% difference in five year growth rates. ICD’s predictions have not been that exact in the past. Plus this report does not seem to include the iPod Touch or the iPad. Both of these devices are near substitutes for smart phones.
I don’t buy it either. I was just out to dinner last night w/the CEO of an airline, and he recently, after trying the iphone, switched his whole company from Blackberry to iphone; as well as switching personally to Mac from PC’s. Apple, no matter what one thinks of Steve Jobs and his politics, or company politics, is an awesome group of products.
So, after less than 2 months of availabity on Verizon, without any sales numbers - with the iPhone 5 on the horizon - Apple’s best days are over?
Guess Jobs will be packing things up and going home this afternoon, huh?
OOPS that’s 0.8% - sorry for the error
The articles leaves out how much money a company makes on the sale of a phone. Apple makes a lot more money on the sale of each phone than any other company. Even if Apple's rate of growth is slightly lower than the overall smart phone market, that makes Apple the most profitable company in that market.
I just bought the 3GS last week and I’m posting on it right now. Great piece of technology. I guess i’ll be ready for the iPhone 6 in October 2012
I will never go back to those tiny screens like iPhones.
I am on a Dell Streak now and am watching the race to see whether Dell, Sony, or Asus will have the best dual core 5” screened phone when my next upgrade comes due.
Not long ago there was an article about how the mobile phone wars were over, and Apple won.
Everbody seemed quite happy to accept that as being the final word, then.
Got one of the 8GB $49 specials?
The GF almost went with one of those. Actually went in to the store to buy one, but since it was her first SP, she ended up with a 32GB iPhone 4.
The 5 might be out at the end of the year. That’s the rumour du jour anyway. They’re either having design issues, or supplier issues due to the Japan disaster.
Your iPhone 6 might not come til 2013
but wait windows phone 7 came out and will beat everything !!(/sarcasm)
I think the real issue is going to be closed system vs open system.
external card or no external card.
wp7 and iphone are closed systems.
Android 2.3 is not ...as closed.
next week we could have something even newer and change everything.
We even see other tablets that are actually being used IN PUBLIC!
Yeah I have the 8gb. Hadn’t heard anything about problems with the iphone 5. I’m just going by the once a year schedule that’s happened in the past. Thing is that if they release the iPhone to both carriers in June, they’ll piss off all verizon customers who just got their shiny new iPhones (and two year contracts) in Feb. And if they don’t release it in June, or release just to AT&T in June, they’ll piss a lot of people off with one or both carriers, who were waiting until the new release.
