ISLAMORADA— A spotted eagle ray that made spectacular leaps from the turquoise waters of Islamorada on Friday gave an Illinois family an unforgettable fish tale to take home from their Florida vacation.

The Hausch family was enjoying an eco-tour boat ride on Friday afternoon when the 200-pound spotted eagle ray with a 5.5-foot wing span that they were photographing leaped into their boat and struck Jenny Hausch in the chest, officials said.

"She was not harmed and managed to get out from under it," said Officer Robert Dube of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Division. Hausch was with her husband and three kids when the incident happened.

After the incident, the creature allegedly stated:

"Now you can call me Ray, or you can call me J, or you can call me Johnny, or you can call me Sonny, or you can call me Junie, or you can call me Junior; now you can call me Ray J, or you can call me RJ, or you can call me RJJ, or you can call me RJJ Jr." ultimately ending with, "but you doesn't hasta call me Johnson!"

Those things are monsters. That would ruin your day if you got tackled by a ray of that size.

Rays jump out of the water when pursued or scared - to break out of the line of sight of the predator. The boat obviously startled it.

Probably like any other ray.

Cut the wings off.

Skin them.

Cut the cartilage from the wing.

Cut the meat into small pieces.

Roll in your favorite seasoned mix, (flour, cornmeal, or combo of both) fry until crispy.

Squeeze a little lemon on the fried pieces and serve with a cold beer.

Actually, I wasn’t sure that they were edible.

But having watched the video, I see that an alert park ranger tossed it back in the water.

I would have tossed him in after it - “Nope, I didn’t catch that fish - it just jumped right in the boat!”

I’ve encountered many during dives in the Caymans, but have never seen one sporting a sun visor before!

I don’t know if you can eat them either, but I would find out.

I don’t know why they wouldn’t be like any other ray, they’re good to eat.

The way my luck runs, they’re probably good to eat it’s the cold beer with it that will kill you.
