The Department of Management and Budget (MMB) recently released the updated economic forecast for MN.

First, the forecast provides the fiscal basis for the upcoming budget showdown between Governor Dayton and the Republican legislature.
Second, the forecast also updates the fiscal situation for what remains of the current fiscal year, which ends on June 30 and is a reflection on the fiscal policies of former Governor Pawlenty.
Third, the forecast provides a forecast for not only the upcoming budget cycle but also the one beyond that.
For the current fiscal year ending on June 30, MMB projects an improvement of $264 million to the state’s general fund bottom line. This means that the state will finish the current budget cycle with a projected positive balance of $663 million.
Governor Pawlenty’s last budget will leave Minnesota well over a half-billion to the good.
Not only did Pawlenty balance the state’s budget without tax increases, he left his successor with a $663 million surplus.
This is a far cry from all the leftist rhetoric about Pawlenty’s fiscal austerity leaving the state in a hole. The reality is a far cry from all the wailing and gnashing of teeth from the Left about Pawlenty’s policies leaving a mess for Dayton. The reality is that T-Paw left office with a balanced budget and a surplus to boot.
And let’s not forget to acknowledge T-Paw’s accomplishment regarding this current budget. Namely, this is the first budget in modern Minnesota history that actually CUTS spending in REAL terms. He didn’t just reduce the rate of projected growth. This budget spends less money than the previous budget.
So where’s the media on this???
In addition to the current budget improvement of $264 million, the upcoming two-year budget cycle outlook (which begins July 1) has improved by nearly $900 million,meaning that the February forecast has improved the state’s total budget outlook by nearly $1.2 billion over the previous forecast last November.
The upshot is that state tax revenues are expected to be $33.3 billion in the upcoming budget cycle compared to just over $30 billion in tax revenues for the current budget.
The the state will take in about 10% more in tax revenues in the upcoming budget cycle than in the current cycle.
In other words, without any tax increases, state spending could still rise 10% IF government leaders choose to do so.
As much as a rag on T-Paw’s “green” silliness, fiscally speaking he did OK.
We have a new dim governor with a dim legislature.
Arkansas is the only southern state on the list................wonder why that is.

55 years ago the NW corner of the state was held in the economic stranglehold of THE CHICKENMAN and his CHICKEN CATCHERS. You worked for them at their starvation wages or you starved.
Then Sam Walton bought some bankrupt Ben Franklin stores and the rest is history.
Really. IL and MI not on the list, but NJ and AK are?? Sounds more political. What kind of business are they thinking about? Welfare-sponsored artist?
The survey must have been paid for by the the governor of Illinois.
A hint: Legislature still controlled by spend-happy Democrats, along with a spend-happy governor. Enough said.
