If the point of Sen. Dick Durbin's Tuesday hearing on anti-Muslim discrimination was to undermine Rep. Peter King's hearings on Muslim radicalization, it ended up achieving the opposite -- and highlighting exactly why King's investigation is so necessary.
For the last few years, a few small but vocal groups claiming to represent American Muslims have stoked fears that hate crimes against Muslims are a growing epidemic, despite the fact that FBI statistics show nothing of the sort. In fact, anti-Muslim hate crimes have actually dropped since their height right after 9/11.
Claims of rising Islamophobia allow certain Muslim "spokesmen" to avoid addressing the problem of radicalization. But they've also created obstacles for law-enforcement officials, who are viewed suspiciously by some of the same advocacy groups.
In fact, the star witness at Durbin's hearing -- Farhana Khera, the executive director of Muslim Advocates -- has a message prominently on her Web site urging Muslims not to talk with law-enforcement officials without an attorney present.
At the hearing, Sen. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) questioned Khera about the warning. She noted that "encouraging community members to seek legal advice as they interact with law enforcement is something every American has a right to do."
Sure, it's legal. But most Americans aren't living in such fear of the authorities that they'd immediately rush to call their attorney before talking to a police officer.
Zhudi Jasser, a genuinely moderate Muslim, summed this point up well at King's hearing earlier this month: "When I walk up to a police officer or the FBI, I teach my children that they are your friends, that you can talk to them. If they ask you things, they're not going to be attacking you."

Turban Durbin once again, opens his mouth, inserts foot, chews vigorously. Typical libtard.
Jasser seems the most benign of any I’ve heard, very polished.
But once as I listened to him on Fox, it was what he did NOT say that stood out. No clear, outright, support of Israel to exist. Never actually said it was acceptable for Christians to evangelize in the muslims community.
In America, we have some Christian sects that actively evangalize and proselytize at the neighbor’s front door on Saturday morning, and while it annoys some people, the worst it evokes is an unceremonious slam of the door. No 9/11, no beheading.
Now Mr. Jasser, like all sophisticated westernized muslims that I’ve ever seen or heard of - and I would like it if there were some who were not in this category - always talks about “reaching out” and “understanding”, but it always (check “mainstream” muslim site like http://www.isna.net/ ) seems to refer to non-muslims in America “getting to know” or “understanding” muslims, not the other way around. It’s just not said. I have not found any muslim anywhere actually condoning muslims trying to understand Christianity or Judaism. Or anything else.
I like to think I listen fairly intently, and I’m halfway decent at searching the web, but it always smells not right. There is always the missing words that immams and so forth would be very upset if they heard.
Coinkadinc ?
"If I read this to you and did not tell you that it was an FBI agent describing what Americans had done to prisoners in their control, you would most certainly believe this must have been done by Nazis, Soviets in their gulags or some mad regime Pol Pot or others that had no concern for human beings," - Senator Dick Durbin
“I have not found any muslim anywhere actually condoning muslims trying to understand Christianity or Judaism. Or anything else.”
Good observation.
We must remember that Michigan is a state that is losing population, and Detroit has lost 50% of its inhabitants. So what politicians do is look for warm bodies that can be counted in censuses to fill up those gaps. Otherwise ~gasp~ they will “lose” federal funding for this that and the other project.
So they do not give a thought to the fact that they are courting new “Americans” who are not invested in making our country healthy and prosperous.
I don’t trust Jasser either.

Calling Mr. Pearl, your testimony is needed.
Maybe Little Dick Durbin could have Mr. Pearl’s head on display like in the Futurama cartoons where the living heads are in bottles? If people really persecuted moozlums in America they’d not be in America. Most people seem uneasy with them (for good reason) yet tolerant their wackiness.
Dick Durbin is the biggest putz in Washington.
Except for Chuck Schumer, Henry Waxman, Weiner, Boxer, Murray (can women be putzes?)....
Lord, there are a lot of putzes in Washington.
Putzette works for me.
(If you want to stay Jewish,” cholent,” pron. “chunt” works for me too. I remember Soupy Sales doing a skit as “Dr. Gribanes” with “Nurse Chunt,” er Cholent)
Yeah, except that we really ARE persecuted!
(Even paranoid people have enemies!)
“seek(ing) legal advice as they interact with law enforcement is something every American has a right to do,”
and is something every American who can afford to probably should do. Have read advice from lawyers who claim to be conservative, or even Christian, and say one should never give anything beyond “hello” and “good-bye” to any cop, just in case. Police just aren’t to be over-trusted in today’s over-lawed, over-regulated, over-litigated America.
Durbin and Ted Kennedy took obama from nothing and promoted him too the extreme, they gave us the muslim in chief..................I don’t hate it is a waste of time and energy, but there are some things and some people I will never forgive, Durbin is high on that list.
Islam is an inherently seditious belief system that should be closely monitored in America. I don’t believe that any office that requires an oath to uphold the Constitution should be held by a Muslim, especially the Presidency.
