Ratings Down for Fox, Bill O'Reilly, Glenn Beck (Maddow UP, CNN also UP)
Opposing Views.com ^ | 3/31/11 | Mark Berman

Ratings for Fox News are in the doldrums, down 21% in primetime so far this year. But don't cry for the right-leaning network -- it's been number one on cable for nine years now, and it still has the top 12 shows.

According to a report from Business Insider, Bill O'Reilly remains in the top spot, but he lost 14% of his audience from the same three-month period last year. Sean Hannity places second, down 19%. Bret Baier (whoever he is) is third, beating out Glenn Beck, who has lost a whopping 30% of his audience.

CNN and MSNBC have been the beneficiaries of Fox's decline. CNN is up by 28%, led by Anderson Cooper's 18% rise, and MSNBC saw a 9% ratings growth. Its star Rachel Maddow has 16% more viewers.

Business Insider speculates on the possible reason:

This time period last year was dominated by the health care debate and for much of that period Fox operated as an extension of the opposition. Now that the nation's focus is international it's harder to figure out an angle where Obama is bad and...nuclear meltdowns and Qadaffi are good.

Another explanation could be that CNN and MSNBC have been doing so poorly in recent years that there was no place else to go but up.

CNN is way up because it does a much better job covering events in Japan and Libya. Always has. We never watch CNN - unless there is a crisis news event. then we keep it there. Fox does a poor job. Especially Shepard Smith who can’t keep his faggot ass out of political quips.

Glenn Beck has some good points, but oh my gosh, how much weeping gloom and doom can you take?

Ditto. He does bring some important facts to light, but I just don't enjoy his "woe is us" rants through an entire hour. I'm aware of America's steep decline, so I don't need constant reminding of it.

Based on those number, FoxNews has little to worry about... they’re WAYYYYY out in front, still.

"....'fair and balanced' means if they report something bad about the Democraps, they have to follow with something bad about the Republicans."

You nailed it. Virtually nightly, the two most egregious hosts specializing in this deliberate and evil moral equivancy are the fascist/populist, Bill O'Reilly, and the Libertarian, Judge Napolitano.

During the 2010 election cycle, I tuned in Hannity. I hadn’t watched him or listened to his radio program for several years.

When I tuned in, I actually thought they were doing a replay of one of his segments from the 2008 election cycle. It wasn’t. It was him being current, and it was nothing more than a repetition of the same ole stuff he has been saying for years.

Those ‘news’ and ‘talk’ programs grow stale without an influx of new talent. Case-in-point is the Sunday morning news programs and the almost-obligatory appearances of McCain, Graham, and a few others.

"I really like the straight news and the panels like the old Brit Hume panel.."

Brit Hume panel? You mean the Mort Kondrake and Charles Krauthammer Neocon show? Ya....that's good stuff if you enjoy watching the cowardly establishment Washington cocktail circuit elitists.

One, conservatives are increasingly moving to web-based news outlets. Two, the stars at Fox have had a long run, but eventually, everything gets old. Fox should like at giving a show to someone like Mark Steyn. I think it’s time to freshen up the lineup, and I agree with an earlier poster; time to put the focus back on news. Start another pundit channel if you will, but give us more news and less opinion.

Know what I miss? The old CNN. The pre-Bill Clinton era CNN that was strictly neutral, and doggedly worked to get stories first.

The left is nitpicking certain parts of the ratings to create a story that simply is not there.

Correct-O. The order of the day is to destroy Fox by any means possible.

liberal bias means low ratings.

OReily is always a tabloid tv telepropter reader

Beck is just being dragged down.

are ratings really up or did they just change the test pattern?

Dump ‘em!

The Bloggers and online news are the real media—the new “pamphleteers,” etc. The old media being the present “fourth estate”

That’s why Uncle Comrade is so intent on taking over the net, and shutting up we the sheeple...

FNC ON THE RECORD W/GRETA 1,488 382 726
CNN ANDERSON COOPER 360 783 370 410

Greta is about double queer boy Cooper.

There is none on any of the cable news channels that get over half of anything on Fox in the same time slot. Most fox news programs are 3x or more everyone else.

Fox has made a conscious decision to go the direction of news “food fights”. Volitile hosts, who tend to talk over guests. Fox is to news what Jerry Springer is to talk shows.

Actually this is pretty much limited to O'Reilly and Hannity's guests on his panel. But it is one of the main reasons that I no longer bother with these shows. Greta is still good. Bret Baier, Cavuto and of course Megyn are still real professionals.

Fits the saying “ the worse you are , the easier it is to get better”

BOR is not all that smart. It shows when he talks over his guests (who are mostly smarter than he is) and then says the usual dopey stuff. Economics is not his strong suit. Frankly, I think the viewers are more interested in what the guests have to say than BOR. BORring!

Hannity is an intellectual lightweight. Strong conservative but it seems often only a sound bite regurgitate. That British Muslim handed him his head (pardon the metaphor) and left poor Sean babbling ‘Sharia Law” Sharia Law...” It was pathetic.

Greta seems to have some sort of speech impediment. Her constant “presint BaMa” Makes me cringe. I really can't stand listening to BOR’s big and dumb mouth, Hannity’s deer in the headlights cluelessness and Greta for any reason.

I really miss Brit Hume. He was a class act and WAY, Way, WAY smarter than any of the rest.
