My mother tells me that They say it's safe to eat food and drink milk that have shown trace amounts of radiation drifting from the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in Japan thousands of miles away.
But when my mother says this, she's being sarcastic, because They, being the government They, simply cannot be trusted to tell us the truth on these matters. And a lot of other otherwise reasonable people feel the same way when we're told by a public or scientific entity that there's no reason to be worried.
Which is why there was such widespread interest in Southern California this week when it was announced that radiation has turned up in samples of milk tested in San Luis Obispo and Spokane, Wash. Suddenly, vast swaths of the population who've never heard of units of measurement like pico curies and milli-sieverts were being fed regular updates on those readings.
A simple fact of life on Earth is that radiation is all around us, every day -- in our homes. Here are seven ordinary items that contain radiation in far greater amounts than the iodine-131 found in the milk samples:

smoke detectors
Americium 241 or Radium 226
The main hazard of the ionizing type detector is the radioactive component, usually Americium 241, which has a half-life of 458 years. Radium 226 has a half-life of 1600 years. Americium is a waste product from nuclear reactors.
It is easily absorbed into the body from the lungs or intestines, and can cause cancer and genetic injury or can have general negative effects on health.
A typical Americium source contained in one ionizing detector intended for home use, would consist of 0.8 to 5.0 micro curies of Americium on a silver disc, coated with a very thin layer of gold. An industrial model may contain up to 15 micro curies. We usually speak of picoCuries of radiation, which are one millionth of a microCurie, as having biological significance for humans.
Have a nice day...
That's a myth. The radiation symbol and warning inside our smoke detectors is to keep us from opening that little compartment and discovering the hidden microphone that records all we say and is monitored by the guys in the big black SUVs.
My husband. He’s just finished his fourth week of being treated with radiation on a daily basis as an after surgery protocol for a non malignant brain tumor. He has 2 more weeks to go. I imagine he’s highly radioactive at this point, but I love him anyway.
That is truly disgusting. It takes a lot for me to lose my appetite, but CONGRATULATIONS — you’re done it! :^(
It’s mainly for kids at Halloween. They love gross-out stuff...........
Mexican floor tiles.
The Puppy Chow snack that was popular a few years back was gross enough, or the Dirt Cake served in a flower pot. I truly think I couldn't eat this. LOL.
What is a ‘Mexican Floor Tile”?.......................
I'm afraid to ask: what are mexican floor tiles?:)
Awwwww, how sweet is that; gotta love true love...:):)
Am-241 decays by alpha emmission
One inch of air will stop all alpha emmissions from your smoke detector. And if you get closer than that, the outermost layer of dead skin cells will stop alpha from reaching living tissues.
Don’t eat your smoke detector.
Gonna go out on a limb here...a Mexican floor tile is a tile made in Mexico?
i could be wrong, but i picture saltillo tiles when i hear “Mexican floor tile...”
Well, that seems to be an awkward thing to post. Is he a FReeper? lol. Of course, why would you be sleeping next to someone you don't much care for anymore would be another awkward part of it.
lol

Not to mention, they are apparently LIVING IN SIN.
;^)
lol. right!
“Not to mention, they are apparently LIVING IN SIN.”
Horrible, what’s happened to our culture.
