Bananas contain potassium, a metal that decays, releasing infinitesimal amounts of radiation.

Granite countertops, like the one I'm sitting at now, in the kitchen. Granite, and many other kinds of rock, contain uranium.

Cat litter. The clay our kitties use for their alone time gives off small amounts of radiation, but large enough to make port detectors designed to find nuclear bombs go bonkers a few years back.

TVs. The X-rays emitting from TV and computer screens have much lower levels of radiation than medical images.

Brazil nuts, which contain radium that the trees absorb from the ground. Many other plants have naturally occurring radiation from metals in the soil.

The house itself. Radon, a naturally occurring radioactive gas, can become trapped inside walls and basements, elevating long-term cancer risks. You can test your home with an inexpensive kit or have a professional do it.

You. Americans take in about 360 millirem (yet another measure of radiation) into their bodies a year, including 2-5 on an average cross-country flight, according to the EPA.

I remember one time when I was moving and one of the moving guys did not want to touch the kitty litter box because, as he said, he considers it “toxic waste.” LOL.....

I see ‘sleeping next to someone’ is on the list — that tears it — the boyfriend I don’t much care for anymore is OUT!

Original Recipe Yield 20 servings

Ingredients

1 (18.25 ounce) package German chocolate cake mix
1 (18.25 ounce) package white cake mix
2 (3.5 ounce) packages instant vanilla pudding mix
1 (12 ounce) package vanilla sandwich cookies
3 drops green food coloring
1 (12 ounce) package tootsie rolls

Directions

Prepare cake mixes and bake according to package directions (any size pan).
Prepare pudding according to package directions and chill until ready to assemble.
Crumble sandwich cookies in small batches in a food processor, scraping often. Set aside all but 1/4 cup. To the 1/4 cup add a few drops of green food coloring and mix.
When cakes are cooled to room temperature, crumble them into a large bowl. Toss with 1/2 of the remaining cookie crumbs, and the chilled pudding. You probably won’t need all of the pudding, you want the cake to be just moist, not soggy.
Line kitty litter box with the kitty litter liner. Put cake mixture into box.
Put half of the unwrapped tootsie rolls in a microwave safe dish and heat until softened. Shape the ends so that they are no longer blunt, and curve the tootsie rolls slightly. Bury tootsie rolls randomly in the cake and sprinkle with half of the remaining cookie crumbs. Sprinkle a small amount of the green colored cookie crumbs lightly over the top.
Heat 3 or 4 of the tootsie rolls in the microwave until almost melted. Scrape them on top of the cake and sprinkle lightly with some of the green cookie crumbs. Heat the remaining tootsie rolls until pliable and shape as before. Spread all but one randomly over top of cake mixture. Sprinkle with any remaining cookie crumbs. Hang the remaining tootsie roll over side of litter box and sprinkle with a few green cookie crumbs. Serve with the pooper scooper for a gross Halloween dessert.

You got a Coleman lantern? The mantles are radioactive, show up on a Geiger counter.

Learned that on a campout I took a Scout troop on to the Surry VA nuclear power plant.

Very well written article.

The focus is on avoiding ‘fear’ and replacing it with ‘knowledge’.

Take a Geiger Counter probe and place it against your head and it will register a few burst of radiation every few seconds..............

Potassium-40 is the largest source of natural radioactivity in animals and people. An adult human body contains about 160 grams of potassium, of which a small fraction is potassium-40. From the isotope abundance and half-life it can be calculated that this produces about 300,000 disintegrations per minute continuously throughout the life of the body.

I’ve got news for you Mr. Hall. Just about everything has radioactive substances in it in trace amounts. The earth and the atmosphere have all kinds of radioactive isotopes. Living things living things are exposed to them and take them in.
