France ditches carbon tax as social protests mount
telegraph ^ | Mar 23, 2010 | Ambrose Evans-Pritchard --International Business Editor

President Nicolas Sarkozy on Tuesday scrapped the country's proposed carbon tax and reshuffled his cabinet in populist tilt after suffering a crushing electoral defeat over the weekend, when his Gaulliste UMP party lost every region other than in its bastion of Alsace and the Indian Ocean island of Reunion.

The vote saw a resurrection of both the Socialist Party and the far-Right National Front, showing how the delayed effects of rising unemployment can change the political landscape long after recession has passed. The jobless rate has risen to 10.1pc, up from 8.7pc a year ago. A quarter of those aged under 25 are out of work.

The government said its energy tax was being postponed indefinitely in order not to "damage the competitiveness of French companies", fearing that it would be too risky for France to go it alone without the rest of the EU. Brussels has announced plans for an EU-wide tax, but the initiative already looks doomed

(LOOKS LIKE IT’S ALL ABOUT MIRRORS IN THE DESERT.)

The key technology for tapping in to the solar energy is ‘concentrating solar thermal power’ (CSTP), which means using mirrors to concentrate sunlight to create heat. The heat may be used to raise steam to drive turbines and generators in the conventional way or it may drive Stirling engines with generators. CSTP is very different from the better-known photovoltaics (PV, sometimes called ‘solar panels’) and should not be confused with it. However, in ‘concentrating PV’ plants (CPV), mirrors are used to concentrate sunlight on to special heat-resistant PV panels which convert the concentrated sunlight into electricity. As the price of PV comes down, it is likely to become increasingly important for large-scale generation of electricity in desert regions.

Next thing you know, France will threaten their tick population’s mandatory two-month paid summer vacations and 32-hour “work” week. If the government tries anything like that, France (basically the entire country) will certainly go “on strike”.

That is what happens in a socialist welfare state where nearly everybody works for the state, and everybody is unionized. It’s the Democrats’ wet dream, and what they desperately want for America in order to make themselves permanent incumbents.

I wouldn't worry about it. As California's economy continues its inevitable swirl down the toilet, the people there can meditate.

NOT SO WELL!

Local resident and Australian Workers Union national secretary Paul Howes is convinced that if the Greens had selected another candidate they would have won the seat. "For sure they would have. While Verity [Firth] is a popular local member this should have been the election the Greens won Balmain convincingly. If they don't win it this time they won't win it in the future," Howes argues.

Looks like Sarkozy is real nervous about Le Pen.

National Front took close to 12% of the vote. Le Pen can no longer be dismissed as "fringe". In the next election Sarkozy's main worry is that he will be considered "neither hot nor cold" and people will shift to National Front.

"Moderates" do not do well when people are given a real choice.

The professor gave a rather interesting talk. Much of which we have seen echoed elsewhere over the past few years.
Regarding the French. The movement is on to start to think out what the carbon trading and taxing schemes really represent. Good for Sarkozy on this one.

In a stinging rebuff to the United Nations and its anti-poverty efforts, Eritrea, (just below Egypt on the Red Sea) one of the poorest countries in Africa, has told the world body that it wants out of its long-term development agreement because the U.N. makes the problem worse, not better. http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2697361/posts
