Five Taliban Insurgent Leaders No Longer Pose a Threat in Uruzgan Province

URUZGAN, Afghanistan (April 1, 2011) - The Taliban’s network in southern Afghanistan is being progressively dismantled with five leaders removed from Uruzgan Province across a two-week period.

The province is regarded as an insurgent staging post for Taliban leaders who are preparing for the fighting season ahead.

Afghan National Police (ANP) Provincial Response Company and their Australian Special Forces partners have been targeting insurgent networks in the province since an operation commenced in mid-March.

Yesterday (31 Mar 11) it was confirmed that Ahmadi Kaka and an associate were killed in Deh Rafshan on 28 March 2011 when they posed a hostile threat to the partnered force. Kaka is known to have worked directly for the leader of the Taliban network operating from Kakarak in Helmand Province to Deh Rafshan and Baluchi in Uruzgan Province. He was a key logistician and bomb maker who facilitated Improvised Explosive Devices and recruited several Taliban fighters.

The Commander of International Security Assistance Forces, General David Petraeus said the death of the insurgent leader is considered to be a major setback for the Taliban in Uruzgan Province.

“Kaka is close to the insurgent leader in Uruzgan Province. His death will be highly disruptive to the Taliban’s plans.

“Across Afghanistan, Afghan National Police and ISAF Special Operations Forces have placed immense pressure on the Taliban leadership and their networks over the winter period.

“It is worth noting the efforts of the Afghan National Security Forces and their coalition partners in provinces neighbour Kandahar and Helmand where there has been considerable fighting and major successes against the Taliban.

“The successful operations by the PRC and Australian Special Operations Task Group in Uruzgan have removed five leaders in two weeks. I have no doubt that the insurgent leadership in the province and neighbouring provinces will be dysfunctional for some time to come and will be concerned about who will be next,” General Petraeus said.

On March 27, concurrent ANP and SOTG operations resulted in two Taliban insurgent leaders being captured who had direct links to the highest levels of the insurgency in the province and were responsible for attacks on ANP checkpoints and facilitating improvised explosive devices across the province.

On 18 March, members of the Special Operations Task Group (SOTG) and the Provincial Response Company-Uruzgan (PRC-U) were conducting a clearance operation in Western Uruzgan when two men displayed hostile intent and were shot and killed. One of the men was identified as Mullah Abdul Ali, a known Taliban commander and facilitator of weapons, Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and suicide bomb attacks operating from Shahid-i-Hassas, Western Uruzgan. The other man was identified as his body-guard.
