The government would keep essential services -- such as air traffic control and the national security apparatus -- in full operating mode.
Federal workers who provide medical care on the job would be kept on, as would employees who handle hazardous waste, inspect food, patrol the borders, protect federal property, guard inmates or work in power distribution.
Workers who protect essential elements of the money and banking system would also report to work.
The Postal Service, which is self-funded, will continue to operate.
How many federal workers would be furloughed? The last time the federal government went dark was during the Clinton administration.
Some 800,000 workers were sent home during the first shutdown and 284,000 were sent home during the later shutdown.
It is unclear how many workers would be furloughed in a new shutdown. Each federal agency has its own plan to wind down operations, and administration officials have not released details.
Will Social Security benefits be mailed? During the last major shutdown, the Social Security Administration mailed checks throughout the crisis, and a close reading of established law makes clear the agency has the legal authority to do so again.
During the Clinton-era shutdown, new Social Security claims weren't being processed because the agency furloughed 61,415 employees. As the shutdown wore on, the agency adjusted its plan and recalled workers to start processing new claims.
Will troops overseas get the resources they need? Yes.

After all, the dems still hold 2/3 of the control of the US government - the senate and the presidency.
And republicans can make a good case therefore that it was democrats who shut down the government accordingly!
Let’s see how much government we can do without.

Lemme let you all in a little secret. I have been working with my congressman to get the US Forest Service to become self sustaining or the lands go back to the counties they are in.
He approached the interior dept and the head told him-his words not mine, that, “we are not in this business to make money.” So we have a dept that sells a resource and it isnt in the business to make money. So the USFS draws funds from the general fund to operate. And there are a lot of them who make 6 figures in salary.
He (the congressman)is working on legislation to take care of the problem. Time will tell what happens.
How much we talking of here a day? 2, 3, 4 billion?
Do the math..I think we could cut spending and never have a bill.

we don’t save money that way only lose because the staff did not work those days!
My son, who is in the Army (stateside, not deployed yet), told me yesterday that they have been told that they may not get paid on the first of next month. He’s not too worried, cause he’s single and has plenty in his account to cover his meager bills. HOWEVER, he said that there are MANY other soldiers who have said if they don’t get paid, they aren’t showing up the next day.
Now I know bravado before the event can be bigger then what may really happen if such a thing happens, but he seemed quite sure the base would be quite empty if such a thing as non-pay happens. The point is, ALL military personel better get paid in a government shutdown or there will be some serious fallout!!!
The cuts the republicans want to make are for non essential items the government has no business funding in the first place.
These items are just a huge waste of taxpayer money.
On the Indian Frontier as well as other places, the Army sometimes ran weeks if not months behind in paying the troops.
Although they pissed and moaned, they were eventually paid.
If they went over the hill, however, the lack of pay defense held no water and they were disciplined accordingly.
Go AWOL or desert at your own peril.
With the IRS furloughed, Tax Refunds will not be processed. If you are on a payment plan there will be no paument process either!
I understand what both of you are saying and I advised my son to show up regardless of whether or not his pay is on time....BUT he is just relaying what the overall feeling right now is.
There is a LOT that this generation of war fighters have done and put up with. FOUR, one year deployments is NOT out of the ordinary. I’m not an expert, but I’m betting these fighters have seen more combat then ANY other American force. They are being used up and while they are patriotic, hard working, and brave to the marrow of their bones, they (according to my son) MAY not react in a way that many soldiers of the past may have.
While I can’t condone not showing up, I also can’t stand in judgement of these soldiers(or their families) who have laid it all on the line and now may get pinched by the politicians who send them off to do their bidding.
Guess that means they no longer get gubmint money, huh.
They are self funded for 6 months, unfortunately a year is 12 months so Uncle Sucker chips in !
Why would your congressman approach the Interior Department when the USFS is in the Dept of Ag?
