Federal Workers in Shutdown Limbo
Money ^ | April 4, 2011 | Charles Riley

With just five days left before a government shutdown, federal workers are pressing lawmakers to cut a deal that will keep the government open for business.

The stakes are high. If lawmakers fail to pass some kind of spending bill by the end of Friday, hundreds of thousands of government employees are likely to be furloughed, and their paychecks stopped.

The National Treasury Employees Union and the National Federation of Federal Employees, which represent a combined 260,000 workers, announced Monday they have asked their members to call lawmakers and encourage them to strike a deal.

You have got to be kidding or smoking something. Medicinal pot perhaps.

There is nothing we need more than a government shutdown.

“How will we know if there’s a government shutdown?”

The sun won’t rise. The earth will stop turning on its axis. And people will never fall in love again.

This is part of the problem.

“We would be much better off spending our tax money locally, rather than sending it to the useless, wasteful D.C. government.”

DC is corrput and incompetent. Shut it down.

It’s an anxious time. I can only note that in the last shutdown, we federal employees all received our back pay and benefits that were due to us,

In the private sector that uncertainty is a constant. If the product doesn't sell or the service isn't wanted we are out of a job.

If we asked for a paycheck anyway because it was "due" us we'd be either laughed at or escorted off the premises.

It’s an anxious time.

I'm sure it is! I mean, not knowing if you are going to get a paid vacation or not.

I truly believe that government union workers live in an alternate time-space continuum from the rest of us.

Exactly. Welcome to the real world, Mr. Federal Employee. There’s no law saying that you have to live in conditions that the rest of us can’t afford. At least not yet.

Same here, bud. Have my own biz in the film industry and I go full throttle everyday knowing my current contracts may be my last. I would like to note that I hate unions.

Just so I am clear with this, we are looking to shutdown the government based on “Last Year’s” budget with which money was already spent?

We are already on the 2012 budget. Cut whatever you can out of this one, both sides claim victory then everything that they tried to cut this year but couldn’t just add to the 2012 cuts.

Remember, Obama is going to have to run for office on a Republican proposed 10 year, 4 trillion dollar cut. He can’t, the left will go nuts. There is no way the Senate or Obama can spin 2011 numbers for the election.

Save the shutdown for next year. Get as close to 61 billion as you can and go from there.

Just like the auto workers. In the past, the UAW workers that I knew loved to have plant shut downs. They still got paid and were able to take long vacation trips. If the govt. shuts down for two or three weeks, no problem. It’s just a paid vacation.

How will we know if there’s a government shutdown?

Less traffic in certain metro areas at rush hour?

The 1995 “shutdown’ was all kabuki theatre. Every federal employee who participated was given extra paid vacation leave. The only problem was a shortage of parking at Pentagon City Mall (a shopping center).

Sir, in the private sector we call this life.

Only the times where I have been furloughed, I didn't get back pay.

And here is another thing. It is only “non critical” employees that will be sent home right? So how long will that non critical job exist? Something that my company deals with on a weekly basis.

You won’t, except for all the whining and crying on government run media.

The longer the shutdown goes on and if Americans ignore Obama and the media you will see no change because by law Obozo cannot shut down essential services. What he can do is illiminate all those $100,000 dollar a year jobs he created since plopping his butt in the White House.

Au contraire. Why do you deserve a steady paycheck while private citizens don’t? I never know whether my clients will pay or not. Perhaps ed workers need a little reality check, unless we all should be on the Federal dole?

Oh yes, the media will play the violins nonstop if this happens, and blame the Republicans. It will be sickening. But, I don’t plan to listen to their cry me a river song.
