Couric out, Pelley in as CBS anchor in June [Scott Pelley]

According to a new report from TMZ and picked up by Fox, CBS will play it safe and turn to an in-house talent in Scott Pelley to replace Katie Couric as its evening news anchor. The decision came personally from the new CBS News chairman, Jeff Fager, who apparently took the job with the condition that he could name the next anchor. However, Fager didn’t exactly have a wide range of options: “60 Minutes” correspondent, is the choice of CBS News Chairman Jeff Fager. We’re told Fager, who became Chairman in February, took the position on thecondition he could decide who takes the desk.

We’re told Pelley, 53, is the choice for two reasons. First, he’s well-liked and respected by his bosses, and second … there really is no second choice who is appealing to the CBS honchos.

Even if CBS wanted to take a flyer on an out-of-the-box choice, they don’t have many options. The reason they have to make this choice now is because of their last out-of-the-box choice to hire Couric away from NBC’s Today show, hardly a training ground for hard news presentations. Couric’s four-year run failed to lift the network from its last-place position among broadcast networks, even with her status as the first female anchor since Connie Chung shared duties with Dan Rather and the first female solo anchor. Couric says that the weight of CBS history and local station performance accounts for the lack of improvement:

“I believe we were in third place for 13 years before I got here,” she said, according to the New York Post. “And I think habits, particularly with an evening news broadcast, move at a glacial pace. And I think that local news stations have something to do with it.”

Remember when C --> BS announced that chicken-neck Katie was there to attrack young men to her news show ? still chuckling ... Why didn't the bozos hire Giselle Buncheon?

And, then pathetically for the last 2 years the captain of the CBS ship stood by chicken-neck Katie ...ad nauseum.

This shot says it all about old chicken neck....

I can state with a great deal of pride that I’ve never watched one minute of CBS’ newscasts, especially since Couric began reading the news.

This is like being appointed one of the last riders in the Pony Express. Who even watches the nightly network news broadcasts anymore?

I hate to agree with the idiot but she does have a point. The people who watch network news these days are people who spent their lives watching it. It is a very old demographic. They don’t switch channels much because in the days before remotes it required you to get up and walk over to the tv and turn a dial. How a network news show does in chasing a diminishing audience that is dying off has a lot to do with what is on before and also after the news. Wheel of Fortune influences the audience far more than you would guess.

Couric:

That's right Katie, it's never your fault.
Everyone loves you and knows you're just perfect.
Enjoy your corporate/national rejection, mediocrity and obscurity.
You earned it.

Oh come on. Katie hasn’t completely killed CBS evening news. I say give her more time...

So much for the former brightest star in the Today Show line-up. Who knew that she wasn’t as bright as she thought she was?

Imagine that, people didn’t want to listen to her. It took how many years to figure that one out?

It took how many years to figure out that a touchy-feelie presentation format, that covered very little news in that half hour, wasn’t going to appeal to the largest segment of their die-hard news listeners, men?

It makes me smile when I think of how much the CBS network decision makers get paid.

For 1/100th of what they make, I could have explained to the top brass, that when it comes to news, people want a balanced approach that delivers the most unbiased information in the least amount of time.

What a novel concept...

Only a die hard lefty could actually fit the words “Big Bang” in while addressing a topic with Katie Couric in it. /s

Little Boy and failure would be more like it for me. ;^)
